I have family in the Lake Norman, NC area (about 20 miles north of Charlotte). They moved down there from LI a couple of years ago. They miss it here but they also liek it a lot down there. Lots to do.

My brother and my best friend live down there. My bro is in Raleigh (though he's on the outskirts so it's not the city area) and he loves it. He is constantly on the lookout for house for DH and I so we can move back down. We lived near Chapel Hill for a while a few years ago and liked it. The housing costs are sooo much cheaper!

DH and I just moved down to Charlotte two months ago. The cost of living is dramatically cheaper and my quaility of life has increased at least five-fold.
Job-wise, I think it depends on what you do /what you want to do. I am an accountant, and there is a high demand for accountants pretty much everywhere with all of the new regulation out there. DH hasn't had quite so easy a time finding the job that he loves/really wants but he moved down here on a Monday and started work on a Wednesday. There are a lot of layoffs around here currently between United Airlines and Bank of America. I think the key to moving down here is for at least one person to have a job set up and a little bit of money in the bank.
It's the best decision we have ever made.

My parents moved last year to Morrisville, NC which is about a stones throw away from Cary.
They love it, my Dad is retired and doesn't work and my mom still works. She works monday through thursday about 4 minutes from there home in Cary and makes more money then she did as a Dental Office Manager on LI doing billing.
Also we have tons of friends that live in Cary who are stationed out of Pope AFB it is a hike for them but many have great homes and all the spouses have great jobs between the local area and the RTP.
The main crime I always see in that area is that people for some reason always get hit by cars at night...

thanks for all ur help ladies. i have been checking out houses in the chapel hill and raleigh areas on the computer, but i don't know much about nc itself. i am in school for teaching now, so hopefully i can find a teaching position down there. thanks for all the good infor, though.
