Anyone know how to add upholestry to dining room chair or

know where i can found out. i already tried the home web sites but they only show how to do the seat.

I just got some chairs that i was thinking of making them look like french chairs where the back of the chair has the upholestry like the seat. i will find a pick to show what i mean.

thanks,

its called french style chairs that have upholstered seats and backs.

the chairs i have have a wicker weave backing that i want to convert to this.

you mean without bringing them to a furniture repair store or reupholsterer...

my guess...and this is only a guess...would be to measure the wickerpart and make a template...then cut out wood in that shape...and upholster with batting and fabric and a staple gun...

the wicker thing is throwing me off...do you mind it showing from the back? can you take it out and insert your new cut out? or easier...can you cut out a template for the front and back and just glue them over the wicker??!

I assume using foam and cardboard and a staplegun would do the trick..

I think i can try cutting it out then the problem becomes support for the backing.

maybe the best thing is to make templates and glue them on each side. but i was afraid it would look funny on the front, it would stick out too much. here is a pic of what they look like.

you are probably right about not cutting out the wicker...

I think maybe put batting in the front...but nothing in the back...you want the front to a little bit out....

around the new fabric piece...you could glue down cording to match...

From the pic it looks like the cane is flush to the front of the chair. That being the case I would remove it and add a new backing of thin plywood covered in batting and fabric.

i don't know if i am explaining this correctly -

can you attach batting to just the front, and then make a 'sack' or something for the chair so that it slips on (kinda) and covers the front and the back???

We thought of that but the problem becomes how to attach the covered plywood to the chair.

thanks guys

I took a close look at ours last night. The fabric definately has something solid between it. It looks like the chairs would have to come apart to insert the piece.

You could leave the cane and just do a double sided fabric with some foam. Staple the fabric to the front of the chair and glue some piping or braid over the staples. You would see the fabric through the cane ont the back . Not 100% the look you were going for but I think it would be nice.
