Ok, FH & I both hate flying so we want to do a honeymoon in either NY or PA. What we're looking for is a place that has private cottages but also close enough to civilization so we can pick up groceries, go horseback riding, etc. Can anyone recommend a place that is CLEAN and comfortable?

What about mirror lake inn in lake placid? I went up there for work once and was bummed I was alone b/c it was so romantic and rustic. They don't have cottages, but there's different buildings not attached to the main inn and the rooms are all cottage-y rustic but still new looking and clean. There's suites so they may have kitchens. It would be beautiful the time of year you're getting married. There's many outdoor activities. I went hiking up Mt. Josephine and the town/village is adorable. Lots of shops!
It's far up there, but you can drive or take Amtrak.

Lake Placid is a great little town. Don't discount Niagra Falls either, it's a classic.

Look up skytop in the Poconos, ive stayed there twice and its gorgeous. Its a mansion which is the INN-very nice at the inn and rooms are real nice but a little smaller than the lodge which has bigger rooms with a fire place and balcony and then theres cottages you can stay in.
Can get a bit pricey but check what month you would be able to go bc prices vary from month to month

its on 5,500 acres, the cottages are about a mile or a little more from the Inn but they provide shuttle service and you can seriously call at anytime and they'll pick you up. They have a big lake on the property, a great spa. The restaurant at the INN has amazing food, and their breakfast buffets are SOOOOOOo good.

hershey, PA is nice.... great shopping and outlets, Hershey park, close to Amish country and Lancaster and Harrisburg. Hershey Hotel is beautiful!

I was going to suggest this also. There is also Mohonk Mountain upstate that is supposed to be really beautiful.

I'm another fan of Mohonk Mountain house!!! We've gone here a few times for a quick getaway and its superb!
Lots of outdoor activities, absolutely GORGEOUS in October, a great spa, horseback riding, hiking, etc. You will LOVE it and its so easy to get to from NYC!

Have you though about New England? Nantucket perhaps? New England looks gorgeous in the fall. You can stay at a bed and breakfast or rent a home out there. Plenty of antique stores and bookshops and wonderful cafes and restaurants.

oh nantucket good idea...ALso been to martha's vineyard and loved it...and at marthas vineyard you can rent a big house for a week, and the prices are not bad either

Belhurst Castle in the Finger Lakes - lots to do there, especially in the summer. Plus, there are tons of wineries, etc.
I prefer Vinifera Inn part of the castle, though, as the older part (while more expensive) isn't as modern...

FH and I are honeymooning in Martha's Vineyard and Newport, RI. We rented a cottage on the vineyard for a week and are staying at a B&B in Newport for 3 nights. We were able to get a great deal. Other than PA and NY you may want to look into Martha's Vineyard, Cape Cod area.

There are a ton of places you could drive to, Canada, Niagra Falls, Cap Cod, Marthas Vinyard etc. But you could also cruise out of NY and go to the Caribbean. You don't have to fly that way and you still get an awesome honeymoon. Not that the above wouldn't be great to. I love to go to those places.
Look at Mohonk Mountain House or maybe the Sagamore in Lake George.

You can always drive up to Niagara Falls, which is always nice. And there's also Newport, RI.

Ok, just for some other suggestions that are in driving distance but not in NY or PA....Newport Rhode Island is amazing and so is Cape Cod, MA.

Lake George! Its awsome there in Oct. and leaves are so pretty, there are tons of cabins, and its so cute, the town won't really be open durning the week, but it will be on the weekend, and theres so much to do! theres a great adventure, they have a hotel across the st. with indoor water park inside of it... theres so much to do! heres a link and FM if you want personal favoirtes we go up there so often. we stay at gore mt. its about 25 mins away and get a condo. Its away from everything but so close to everything fun too! thers caves, and hiking. so much Link
