Anyone know the proper way to cut hydrangeas?

If there is a *proper* way ...

Mine are blooming like crazy & I'd like to cut some & put them in a vase but not sure where on the stem is the best place for the plant to cut them.

I am not sure where the best place to cut them is, but I have read that it is helful to smash the bottom of the stems before putting them in a vase. Supposedly, they last longer that way. I have never tried it, but we had hydrangeas in my parent's backyard and it is tough to keep them for long in a vase sometimes.

cut them blunt and smash the end with a hammer - seriously and dont forget to put half a cup of sprite ( or any other lemon/ lime soda) in the water - it will keep it fresh for days longer

Also, Wendy, my mom dried the hydragngeas from my wedding & it worked very well. She still has them. She just let the water evaporate, I don't think she hung them or anything.
