I have 6 bridesmaids, ages 28-52, all different sizes and shapes and they live all over the country. Im thinking of just telling them to get a long black dress with sleeves. Has anyone done this or is planning to do this? Has anyone seen this done? How did it turn out?

Re: Anyone let BM get their own dresses?
If I was given a black dress with sleeves, I wouldn't know what to get really, all my black dress have straps no sleeves. You must choose material at the very least.
My girls were measured all over and had there emasurements sent to Commack and then Commack shipped there dresses out if they needed too.

Same situation, I chose a designer, a color, and material. I made them all get the A-line skirt, since that compliments everyone, and pick the top that complimented them the best. I used Impression Bridal outfits. It worked out GREAT !!

Re: Anyone let BM get their own dresses?
Jess - just ahd to pipe in here. i just went through this with my girls. i have 7. i love them all to death. however, we just tried to do the choose your own dress thing, and it was a bit trying to say the least. i tried to give them parameters, like color, shades, material, length etc. but basically, i didn't really care what length they chose or what the shade of the color was, so i was fairly wishy washy. this proved too difficult and so I ended up actually choosing a whole range (like 26) different BM dresses for them from 3 different manfuacturers, all available in similar colors and the same material. then we did purples and blues, so that if different manufacturer colors turned out differently it wouldn't be so obvious (instead of 7 purples, we have some purples, some blues). Hopefully it will look nice, but this was like a marathon nightmare for me to organize. First 4 of the girls chose the same dress (out of 25 frieken dressses two chose X and two chose Y). and then they proceeded to fight over them. i told them i didn't care, but THEY did and neither wanted to wear the same one, blah blah blah.
In the end it was okay, but i ended up feeling it would have been a lot better for me to be a little more strict and just pick their dresses and tell them which ones they were wearing. i would definitely do that next time.
I do think it is easier with black to let them choose on their own, but plesae remember, you are going to get 6 different blacks. Plus, every day you are going to get 4 emails or phone calls asking for more direction (because they will want more than what you are giving them). JMO - try to be as specific as possible and perhaps even choose the designer, material and color (and even skirt and let them chose a top). Something like that. GOod luck! and let us know how it goes.

Re: Anyone let BM get their own dresses?
I'm planning along the same lines...except I don't care if the fabric or sleeves match. I told them to pick up a cocktail length black dress. They are totally different sizes...one may want spaghetti straps, but the other one may prefer short sleeves or something as she's heavier. As long as the length is close and it's black, it'll match sufficiently for pictures to make it clear they are the 'chosen ones' :), their flowers (yellow) will match and stand out against the dress & they will definitely be able to actually use the dress in the future! Plus no fittings, etc. needed, or major $$ outlay unless they want to. My only quandry was whether they'll roast in the sun for my June date, but May will probably be ok for you with long sleeves. Why does the fabric or hue of black have to match? Who cares?
That being said, picking a 'bridal' designer with mix and match tops/bottoms they can choose once you've picked the color is also a great idea, if you want more uniformity! But they won't be wearing those ****ers again I bet. On the other hand, probably they won't wear long sleeved formal length black dresses too often either.

Re: Anyone let BM get their own dresses?
I picked a designer (dessy/after-six) and a color and they all picked their own dress. I had 6 girls ranging from 19-37 with various shapes and sizes. This way they were all comfortable with what they wore. There were some strapless, tank, halter - whatever they wanted. Some were 2 piece, others 1. It looked great - I wasn't going for uniformity, I wanted each girl to be an individual, but there was no mistaking who was in the bridal party.
It might actually be more difficult for them if you don't limit the choices somewhat.

Re: Anyone let BM get their own dresses?
I told my girls to buy a red/claret dress, and I really do not mind if they are different shades of red and different styles. I told them if they are having trouble shopping there are many designers we can choose from online. I am going to check in with the girls shortly, and see if they have had any luck because the wedding day is coming soon.. It can definately be more challenging coordinating everything but I wanted them to buy a dress they can wear again.

I let them decide between 5-6 dresses and they all came to a decision easily-thank God!

Re: Anyone let BM get their own dresses?
I suggest limiting their choices to one or few designers as well... I agree with above posts. The girls may be too confused and may not necessarily be able to match their dresses well. Pick a few designers, and then a color, and let them choose the rest.
