This Saturday, on my way to the supermarket, I found a beautiful dog running loose in the street. He almost got hit twice. He had two collars (one electric which obviously didn't work) and no tags. I rescued him and called all of the local shelters to see if anyone had reported a dog missing, but nobody was there because it was a Saturday. I took him home, posted flyers around my neighborhood (Sayville), and allowed him to spend the night at my house (on the couch no less.... ) He's a sweet boy...obviously someone's pet (He even knew 'paw' amongst other 'tricks.) Because we already have two dogs and were going to be gone all day on Easter, we brought him to our local shelter yesterday. The shelter said they will wait 7 days for the owner to call and claim the dog (I hope they will call), and then they will put the dog up for adoption to the public. I'm sure he will get adopted out because he is a purebred Welsh Springer Spaniel, but I'm so upset over him being away from his owners. I have to put more signs up because the rain is washing them away, but in the meantime, if you know of anyone in this area who has lost a dog or are interested in adopting him, please FM me for details.

Re: Anyone lose a dog or want to adopt?
That is so sad. I really hope that the owners find him. He needs to be back with his family! Maybe he has that chip in him where they can track the dog?
The supermarkets is usually where I see a Lost Dog sign so maybe the owners posted a sign there? Or Petco or a local pet store?

Re: Anyone lose a dog or want to adopt?
I checked for lost dog signs and posted my 'FOUND DOG' picture with my number and pictures of the little guy in the supermarket and on the street I found him on. I have to add them to town but I want to wait until the rain subsides, which it doesn't seem to be doing any time shortly. In the meantime, I can't stop thinking about him. If he is spending too long in the shelter, I'll probably wind up adopting him.

Re: Anyone lose a dog or want to adopt?
It actually is ( ), but before you freak out on me (I'm hardcore animal rights activist so hear me out), the reason I put him in there is because:
(1) Pet owners always call their local shelter to find out if their dog has been turned in
(2) I left signs with my number all over the neighborhood so that if the owners were searching for him, they could call me and I would tell them where to go
(3) I spoke to someone from the shelter that said they won't never put a purebred down and that they have old pitbulls that have been living there for over 8 months
(4) No-kill shelters adopt dogs from them (esp purebred, well behaved dogs)
(5) We have an agreement with them that if his 'time is ever up' (which they guarantee me it won't be) that we have first dibs on adopting him (at which point we'd find a home for him.)
It was a hard decision (and one I'm sick over) but we couldn't keep the dog here with ours because he was fear biting and we weren't going to be home to watch him all day.
I'm sure they boy will find a home, I just wish it was going to be his own. And if it's not his own, I hope he wasn't happy there to begin with and that's why he ran off.
I'm going to cry again. Pray for my little guy.

Re: Anyone lose a dog or want to adopt?
you did the right thing. I like the list of agreements you left with them. I would do the same thing. I have two cats. In addition, I feed the feral cats in my neighborhood( i had two of them fixed, just waiting for the aspca van to come to Queens so I can bring others to get fixed).
Take care!!
Ps if you know anyone in the queens area who wants to adopt a cat, please send them to animals can't talk in Little Neck. Thank you. Michele

I definitely will. Is your shelter accepting cats? I have a cat in need of a home but all of the shelters I contacted are not accepting anymore cats unless they are kittens.

Re: Anyone lose a dog or want to adopt?
So many shelters do that. I would say bring her to my shelter, but it is so small and the elderly ladies in charge of it do little or no advertising, so the cat would never get adopted. You should what I did. There was a sweet cat that this old man was taking care of. He had a dog house set up fo her in his back yard and he fed her. Winter had started and she was so little and friendly- I couldn't leave her there. He said that I could take her to a shelter. My Fh and I got a old carrier from ACT. picked her up, put the inthe carrier and 'dropped' her off at ANimal Haven in Flushing(I brought two cats there last year and both got adopted). A few days later I stopped off there after work. I wanted to see if she was okay. When I saw her, she meowed like crazy... i was like shhh.
Little shelter is a good one to drop the cat off. I know it sounds mean, but every no kill shelter is going to say no. Or try leaving her by the North shore animal league door.
good luck.

Re: Anyone lose a dog or want to adopt?
So you think they'll say no but then accept them if they're dropped off? I don't know what to do. It's my sister's cat and I wanna die just thinking about her fate. I'm deathly allergic to her (I can't breathe within 50 feet of her house) or I'd take her. Problem (aside from her old age) is that she's not the friendliest cat to strangers (she hisses.) She hasn't reacted well to new owners. Two of them returned her back to my sister but she can't keep her bc her kids' asthma is too bad.

Yes. If you drop off a animal at a no kill shelter, they have to take them. My parents did it at North Shore, i did it, and my co-worker did it. They always say that they are too filled, no space for them. SOmetimes , you need to resolve to that.
Let me know what happens. good luck

Re: Anyone lose a dog or want to adopt?
I'm just so torn up about it because she's an older cat that flips out when she's out of her natural element. I think she'd rather die ( ) than to live her life in confinement but I know that's not the humane thing to do. Honestly though, she'll hiss and spit at strangers and snuggle up and purr on my sister. It's so sad. You really think she should drop her off?

Re: Anyone lose a dog or want to adopt?
Honestly, when u think about it.no. I mean everyone I know who did that (including myself) had found the cat as a stray, it wasn't a family pet. I would't recommend that for your sister's cat. Here is a idea . Little shelter in Huntington does 'courtesy' postings. Do a search on google to get their #. Your sister could have them place an ad on their website. Under her pic you have an explanation of why the cat has to be adopted out. Hey, I love that idea. I am giving myself a pat on the back. .
Also, put an ad in the charity section. If I find out about any other shelters that do courtesy postings I will let you know.

OOh try, putting an ad on petfinders.com. You might get some responses that way.

Re: Anyone lose a dog or want to adopt?
I'm on the phone with her now. She's so upset but feels it will be better than making her suffer in a shelter. I'm so sad.
