Re: Anyone making homemade baby food??

I am trying to make everything at home, I will even attempt cereal after I finish the boxed stuff that I have. So far it's very easy if you do it in batches 1x per month. I made green beans today and they are not pureeing very well. And, I can't find organic peas in the pod, so I might just give her jarred instead.

I would like to try, but don't know if it will be something I will be able to do. What is involved Niha? I have a couple months before veggies and fruits, but I want to start cereal next month.

If you want to do this I suggest the book Super Baby Food. I think it is by Ruth Yaron. I used it as my bible of what to feed Annalise each month and how to make the food. It is ggod for newborns to toddlers. She has been off baby food for a while now. When we cleaned out the freezer Sunday night, my DH said it was time to throw away all the cubes of veggies she never ate. I am so sad my dd is a toddler now, but it certainly is easier to serve table food.

it sounds so interesting to do this....

I know frozen veggies have more nutrients, b/c they are frozen right after harvesting...do you use them?

I have the book Super Baby Food too, I love it so much, and plan to continue to use the recipes when Lyla is a little older. If you're committed to healthy eating and want to avoid commercially prepared foods, I would recommend it too.

Stacey, it is so easy, if you can spend a couple of hours a month, all you have to do it steam or bake (to preserve nutrients) the veggies and fruits and puree them. Then, you fill up ice cube trays, and after they are frozen you pop them out and put them in freezer bags with the date and name on them. Most veggies and fruits last for up to 2 months in the freezer. Each cube is one serving for beginner eaters. So, the only supplies that you need are a peeler, blender/food processor, ice cube trays and freezer bags. Oh, and a steamer basket too.

I have made butternut and acorn squash, yams, carrots, green beans and pears and apples so far. Lyla hasn't had any jars yet, but we might use them when we travel.

If you use frozen veggies they cannot be refrozen, and have to be used within a couple of days. Canned are not suggested b/c of sodium content.

I like buying all organic, and even though organic is more expensive, overall the food is super cheap to make! The book also has info on making homemade cereals, I haven't done it yet, but it looks very easy too.

I have always said that when I have a baby I will try my best to make them homemade baby food all the time. This sounds soo interesting and easy.

Re: Anyone making homemade baby food??

We feed Joseph jarred veggies and fruit (Earth's Best since it's organic) but we make all of his meats from scratch. The thought of jarred pureed meat and chicken just nauseates me but the homemade stuff is pretty good once it's mixed with applesauce and rice.

Misha, we haven't started meats yet, but I totally agree, it looks like cat or dog food in those jars!

my mom cooked for all 3 of us. she used to make all types of soup from scratch and then freeze them.

She always tells me when I have kids...if she ever finds jarred food in my house...she'll throw it away when I'm not looking
