I'm considering not using a reception hall and renting a tent etc...I was wondering if anyone else was doing this and if so where are you doing it? Also, what caterer are you using? Any advise would be appreciated
TIA

Re: Anyone not using a RH?
FH and I considered this too, because we're very off-the-beaten-path kind of people. After a lot of research, I decided to book a RH simply because I needed organization. I needed to know that the whole day wouldn't be a total eff up and even hiring a DOC wasn't sitting well enough with me. I also realized that some caterers wouldn't provide things like linens, place settings, utensils, tables, chairs, etc. (stuff we'd have to rent from a party supply place)...when it was all broken down, I realized that I'd actually spend less money by booking a RH (and bargaining - hey, Father's Day is cheaper, it also means I can have a June wedding!) and have the confidence in knowing that a RH is (generally speaking) a well-oiled machine - they do this all the time and are well-schooled in any kind of strange things that might come up on your wedding day. I was so hell-bent on NOT having mine at a RH, and spent two months researching it only to decide that it wasn't worth it stress-wise or money-wise.

Same here. I just was too worried about a slip up with one of the vendors that I booked a RH for peace of mind. I was so set on doing something a bit non-traditional, but at the end of the day, the cost was actually lower at an RH and all of the variables are pretty much controlled.
The Queens County Farm Museum (I think is the name) is a reasonable site fee, and is really pretty, if you do want to look into a tented reception somewhere.

That was what I was thinking...I don't think I can pull off organizing a wedding on my own at home. Thanks for telling me your experience!

Re: Anyone not using a RH?
If you want a tent feel - you should definately take a look at Bridgeview Yacht Club - the reception hall is a tent. Inside has beautiful draping and chandeliers and is right on the water.
I loved it the minute I walked in.
good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Re: Anyone not using a RH?
Why not check out one of the Vineyard caterers? That way you still have the organization and experience of an RH, but you can also have a tent!

I think if you plan on using a tent versus using a RH it may actually cost more since you have to rent EVERYTHING.

Re: Anyone not using a RH?
I had a tent wedding at Montauk Yacht Club....there was good and bad with the venue....if they have improved the catering, I would say take a look. There are photos in my review.

Re: Anyone not using a RH?
We thought of this but in the end it would have cost more than the RH...and I would have had to hire a coordinator to keep everything organized.

We didn't get a RH... We are renting the party room in the church where we are having our ceremony!

Re: Anyone not using a RH?
My girl friend is doing this at one of the Vineyards out east...Old Field Vineyard...its a lengthier process but it does give you control over every last detail...
Up to you!

Re: Anyone not using a RH?
Thanks everyone! I am going to start calling Vineyards. I think renting everything is going to cost too much not to mention be a huge pain.

What is the minimum number of people for the bridgeview yacht club? It sounds like exactly what I am looking for.
Nevermind, its on their website!

Re: Anyone not using a RH?
What tent company and caterer are you using for your engagement party? And does the caterer provide the dishes or did you have to rent them?
