Anyone NOT want kids at the church??

Anyone NOT want kids at the church??

Is anyone else having this issue? For me, the church ceremony is really teh WEDDING... the reception is just teh big party to celebrrate...... SO, I think that chidlren, especially babies who cry or who are beginning to talk, shoudl not be brought to the church. I think it's fine to bring them to the reception.....it's a big party! But I think the church shoudl be quiet......

SO.....FH's sister-in-law and cousin plan to bring their one year old children to the church, but not to the reception....does anyone else think this is backwards???

Anyone have any suggestions about how to deal with this, or do we just go with it to be polite?

usually anyone is allowed to go to the church....some people will come see you married, and not be invited to the reception....a church welcomes anyone...so I think technically a stranger could come in and watch your wedding.

at one of my friends weddings there were random strangers off the street who just wandered in and watched the ceremony

Yes, there are a lot of people who just like to see weddings. My aunt's friend was telling me her mother pops into weddings at the church where I'm getting married all the time because it's across the street.

Hopefully the parents of the young kids will do the right thing if their children get restless and head out of the room.

I actually felt the opposite, I wanted EVERYONE at the church, but I did not want young kids (under 10) at the reception.

i can see your point...you can't control a baby's decision to scream, cry, get hungry.....etc....as a mother, i can actually see and feel your pain...for that reason, there are places i don't take my 5 year old and she's extremely well-behaved.

maybe arrange for a sitter...or extend the time the sitter watching the tot [during the reception] for the ceremony time and offer to pay the extra time?

hope it works out...the worst thing that happens is that your relatives have to miss parts of the ceremony to run their screaming child out of the room.

Usually everyone goes to the church but then kids aren't invited to the reception, which, I agree, seems a little backwards. We were at my cousin's ceremony recently and our other cousin's 2 year old started crying like a banshee. Luckily, she's very considerate and her husband took her outside.

Me too - I even invited my kindergarten students from this past year to come to the church.

I had the same issue as you. There were sooooo many people who had kids and being that the wedding was away, I was terrified that everyone would bring their kids. My friends had gotten married and the 3 year old ring bearer screamed his head off!!!!!

I was so scared that the same thing would happen to me.
So many people did bring their kids and thankfully (for them!!) their kids were very quiet.

I had heard that at a recent wedding the priest made an announcement before the ceremony began that if anyone's child were to start crying to please remove them from the church. I almost asked him to make that announcement!!!!

I feel the same way. FH's coworkers mentioned to him they are going to bring their children to the church. I am VERY unhappy about this yet there is nothing I can do about it.

GREAT idea...i think the priest who is marrying us woudl have no problem doing that. He's so down to earth. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

I'm worried about this becasue at my older sister's wedding we all missed hearing the vows becasue these two littel girls were makign so much noise.....you know tap shoes and littel girl voices.....and churches that echo....it was terrible!

at my fsil's wedding......their first cousin went out of control and his parents did nothing to stop him. He was 4 years old!! his mother thought it was so cute.

they have already been warned about my wedding! And if she allows it to happen at my wedding......she'll be asked not to join us at the reception.

Can you tell I don't like this aunt? LOL

we're getting married at the church in the same parish as the school I teach in and I am sooo excited that a lot of my students will be at the Mass. They're so excited. It's a special expreience to celebrate a wedding and you should have who you want there, but kids see a wedding as something magical and I think any children in your family would love to see you get married!
ETA: I just saw that the child in question was 1! Maybe have somebody in your family talk to her?

Re: Anyone NOT want kids at the church??

I know it can be a little unerving if you hear a child cry or talk at the wedding. Especially since you spent months and months planning. You don't want anything to be ruined. The thing is that the ceremony is the marriage and it should be shared with family and friends. So let people know b4 hand. If you bring your child and s/he becomes a disturbance you must leave immediately. Otherwise, what's a little noise from an angel? They belong in church anyway!

Tough call though. You have to do what you feel is best for you and your day. Good luck with your decision!

Thank you so much, ladies. It's nice to see that I'm not the only person who thinks it's backwards to bring babies to the church but not the reception.

We will have a babysitter. My mom is asking a co-worker or two who are teachers to watch my baby nephew. The problem is the other two one year olds. Their moms don't want anyone wathcing their babies. I can undersand this. If it were me, I woudln't want a stranger watchign my baby either. BUT, i woudlnt' bring my baby the the church!

ugh.

i like how the last poster put it.... something about angels and them belonging in church... i'll be thinking of that if they start to cry and scream!

Truthfully... I don't want kids at my wedding PERIOD! This has become such an issue with me and FH... he has a lot of family with young kids and they'll be traveling. So he's worried that if they're not invited more than half of his family won't come. I've decided to lay down on this one... I'm pissed, but what can I do. So I sorta feel your pain.

Re: Anyone NOT want kids at the church??

Yep, it's frustrating.

Does this idea seem rude?.....

I thought about asking anyone with babies to sit in the very back of the church. It's a BIG, long church. That way they can quickly step out if the babies get noisy

What do you girls think?

The church we're getting married in actualy has a booklet that says they discourage children from attending because they can often be a destraction from the meaning of the ceremony.

I agree! (Sorry, but I do)

amen. but my big sister does not wish to come to my wedding as a result. I am saddened by this but the rule stands. I think my 7 mo old nephew would rather be in his quiet crib below his monkey mobile rather than be out for 12 hours til 2am at a noisy dance party.
