When we get a house in 50 years when we can afford one...I'd like a dog, but I LOVE my two cats and would feel so guilty bringing a dog in and possibly giving them less attention. Anyone else?

I had cats all my life, then we got a dog, all was good....now I ony have a dog. I find that I prefer the dog, and DH is allergic to cats

Did you have the cats with the dog at the same time? I didn't used to like cats until I got my two little guys. Now...I'm obsessed. But I love dogs too. I am nervous of how they will react.

yes! i was a total cat person before. i even got into one of those cat vs. dog arguments with one of my friends. anyway, so then i got my 'family' dog, a lab mix and i like both species.... then i moved out and got my little dogs and that was it. im a dog freak now. but mostly only for toy breeds. i dont know why, but there you have it.

yup...we had the 2 cats from kittenhood, then Nugget was dumped in the park across the street, my dad said if he was there in the AM, we'd keep him. They all got along...the cats ignored him most of the time. Then we got more cats.....and we put Nugget down b/c he had cancer. Then we went through 3 dogs that never worked, cats hated them, stayed upstairs. Then we moved, a few years later got Max from Brookhaven animal shelter. My 1 cat loved playing with him, another cat was cool with him, and the 2 old girls stayed upstairs. The cats eventually died off, mine being the last to go....and Max was quite depressed for awhile.

Well - in 50 years that wont be a problem J/K But Seriously, I probably would feel very guilty getting a dog, even though I love them. I don't think my cat would be very happy with me. But I have heard that eventually they adjust.

They will live forever! Ok, maybe not 50 years...
I guess I will have to see when the time comes. I just would feel so bad.

it's funny you should post this question, bc this is how i am feeling right now!! We just got our puppy Casey and my cats are SO mad at me. Well, the older one was mad but then he sniffed Casey and walked away. TJ is very mad at me I can tell but they are going to have to adjust to Casey. But I have tremendous guilt and joy at the same time bc i am so happy to have a dog again to play ball with and walk!!

I'm nota cat person though. My FH loves cats. So I'm the dog person and he's a cat person. My FH always had a cat at home and when he was growing up then when he moved in with me and my dog. He wasn't crazy about it at first, but now he loves my dog and plays with him too.

We're going through this right now... I've had my kitty for 6 years, but I've also been dying to get a doggie... so we just adopted an older dog from the SPCA about a week ago.... for the first few days I was just wracked with guilt... I really love my kitty to death and am so devoted to her... and she's not the sweetest cat in the world, and doesn't handle change so well... so she hid in the basement for the first few days and I felt AWFUL. But, I did a lot of reading on how to introduce a dog into a home with the cat, and how to make the transition as painless as possible for the cat, and to be honest, it's working! We had a breakthrough last night - kitty slept on her bed in the same room as the doggie! The key is to be VERY patient and to avoid forcing kitty to accept the doggie... let them go at their own pace and introduce them to each other very slowly...

Awwwwwwwww, how sweet. So now I'm hopeful that I'll be able to do it one day. Animals are so darn cute.
