So i realize I'm 11 months out from my wedding and I haven't started dress shopping. In fact, lately I haven't even been looking at magazines etc.
I'm SCARED to death to consider dress shopping, and not looking forward to it.
There's lots of reasons and i probably sound insane, but...
I'm really not a shopper.I hate malls, I hate clothing shopping. Period.
I'm a borderline plus girl. I only wear a size 10/12 jeans, but I know with my bra size I'll have to order up..... I wish I lost more weight, but I hate being made to feel fat as hell.
Last year I ordered a bridesmaid dress through David's Bridal, they tried to claim I went up - get this - @ INCHES in my bust line, but not at my bra line, claiming I needed a larger dress due to an increase in cup size.
No, I didn't change weigh tor in any of my other clothing. But I was so embarrassed by the conversation following that, I now dread dress shopping and miraculous changes in size.
THen.....
I still don't know what I want in a dress. Most of the designs out there are so modern for the kind of dress I see myself in (sigh). That's what I get for having a twist on a medieval, romantic wedding.
Also...
None of my girls can go with me. So, who do I ask to go? A few casual acquaintanes have pretty much offered, but I feel like that's odd as they aren't in the bridal party. Plus, they aren't people I typically go to for an opinion.
Plus.. my aunts all live in Florida. My grandmother has passed on.
What's a girl to do? Anyone else ina similar situation?

Re: Anyone Scared of Dress Shopping?
I have some of the same anxieties as you. Im plus size so I sometimes feel there wont be much selection or that Im going to hate the way I look. Im also top heavy but I wat a strapless, prob sweetheart neckline dress and Im worried about the girls not being held up lol. I want to lose a few pnds though b4 I start shopping which is another reason Im waiting til my yr mark.
As far as all your girls being oot.. im sry about that. Is your mom around to go with you? Any members of FHs fam that u are close with that can go?

Re: Anyone Scared of Dress Shopping?
I was sooooo scared. But in the right mindset I'm a GOOD shopper so I went really really prepared. I also went to a sample sale and didn't know what to expect, but it was much calmer and better than I imagined. Research some places on here that are good and supportive to plus sized girls. Being made to feel guilty does not help at all! Don't let anyone shame you... there are so many dresses out there, something will look beautiful. I went onto theknot.com for research on styles and then I went to each designer's website that I liked and before I went to the store I printed out a few that I liked. I was so afraid I was going to have a panic attack putting on the long white fancy dress but it just felt right!! It will be ok!

Re: Anyone Scared of Dress Shopping?
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. I'm down 15 pounds, and hopefully more... but I can't procrastinate dress shopping forever.
My mom's around, and she's brutally honest with her opinion. I know she won't let me walk down the aisle in a dress that looks horrible, but I also know she won't necessarily agree with what I like style wise.
As far as FH's family - all in Florida.
Most of our local friends are guys and their gf, etc. However, many of the Gfs are jealous that we're engaged and getting married.
FH calls it my wedding planning dilemma.. no one to be excited with

Re: Anyone Scared of Dress Shopping?
When I FIRST started dress shopping I was tipping the scales at 200 lbs and it was really frustrating because most samples didnt fit me. I subsequently lost almost 40 lbs and it was just equally as hard to find something that looked good and that I was comfortable in. Im still around the same size as you and when I found MY dress not only was I comfortable but I felt like a princess. Dont look at it as a scary venture. You have to let yourself have fun and roll with the punches. Even now theres still samples that didnt fit me and you know what?! I didnt care because you will come to see that most samples would only fit a barbie lol. Dont be scared or intimidated. This is one of the parts of the wedding that is totally and completely about YOU! Have fun with it! Theres nothing scary about it. Do some research on line and find some dresses you like. If you have a good attendant at the bridal salon they will tell you if you are way off track for your body style. Trust the girls that are there to help you. They do this for a living. You will find the dress of your dreams. It may not be one of the first because in my case I tried probably close to 50 dresses before I got that feeling. Youll know. I promise.. Youll know. Good luck!! and HAVE FUN!!!

I was really dreading it too. I wear a size 14 and really wanted to lose weight, but hadn't started dieting when my mom suggested I go dress shopping. There are plenty of samples for you to try on. A lot of the sample size 8s and 10s may not close (don't fret - gowns run little small), but then can clip you in and it doesn't look or feel ridiculous.
I went dress shopping with my mother and my sister. My mother is brutally honest and wears her feelings on her face. haha So even when she is trying so hard to be supportive - I can tell when she's lying. My sister is an angel, but also honest. You want that tough love when you're dress shopping. If you are thinking of bringing someone who you fear might be brutal - tell them what you're nervous or insecure about.
I tried on probably 30 dresses before I found the one - even when I found it, I was scared to admit it - so I tried on 5 dresses after. But every time I tried on a new dress - I kept wanted to go back into the other one.
You'll be fine! Know your budget, have an idea of what you want, and wear full coverage under garmets! Best of luck!

Re: Anyone Scared of Dress Shopping?
I was scared of dress shopping at first, but I found it to be a blast. I went with my mom and she did disagree on some things I liked, but we agreed on one that I realllyyyyy loved. they always are going to order sizes up, that's just how it works unfortunately. EX. I wear a street size 10 and they ordered a 16! I told them I planned to lose weight, and they said they would just take it in. Just take it one step at a time.

Re: Anyone Scared of Dress Shopping?
I'm 10 months away, and I am very scared to go shopping! I didn' t lose nearly as much weight as I had hoped by now, so I'm just not looking forward to trying on too-small dresses :( And I'm at that time now where I really need to start looking. People keep asking me about my dress and seem surprised when I show a real lack of enthusiasm about dress shopping lol. My mom is also not that into it, either, which kind of disappoints me. Whenever I mention going, it's almost like she could take it or leave it. Oh well...Guess i just have to put it on my to-do list and actually DO it!

I'm in the same boat!
I never planned on losing weight just for a wedding, I've been tryign desperately just to live healthier lifestyle for me.. (and FH). I've dropped 15 pounds (yay!) but would still like to lose another 15-20 (20 is my ideal weight).
I'm - okay- with my weight, but that's just it. My mom isn't excited, wedding party isn't around.. no one to shop with who is happy or excited :(

Re: Anyone Scared of Dress Shopping?
You will be a beautiful bride and youbwill find your perfect dress! I feel for you when it comes to mom not being into it. I went dress shopping by myself bc my mom didn't seem to want to go with me and when I found my dress I was so excited that I called her up and asked her to come to the store to see the dress ASAP. she was hesistant, so I bought it without her. I was very sad but I got over it.
I also feel for you that you don't feel like no one is excited about your wedding I was on the same boat bc I was originally planning a destination wedding and no one seemed to care but as soon as I canceled that nightmare of a wedding everyone came around. So hopefully things will turn around for you and you will feel the love,
