Anyone use an Ipod for reception music?

Hey there,

Just curious, FH was wondering if anyone out there used an IPOD w/ really good speakers as the music for the reception? We have a great Ceremony/Cocktail Hour musician (a guitarist) and then FH wanted to hire the guitarist for dinner maybe and the rest of the reception to have an IPOD.

Anyone do this or know anyone that did? Did it work? Regrets? opinions? TIA!

I'm asking because I really can't decide if its just so tacky and depressing or sorta East-Village-Hip, hahaha. Do we save the $1000 on a DJ and put it towards the honeymoon? Or is it worth having if i dont' want an MC making 100s of announcements?

I'd really appreciate as many opinions as possible. Thanks so much ladies!!

Honestly - I would spend the money on a DJ... you can get a really good DJ for under $2k.. and the only thing that I have remembered from weddings that I have attended in the past was the food and the music.. can you maybe cut the budget from the flowers or somewhere else.. IMHO the DJ is a VERY IMPT part of the wedding...

I'd spend the xtra and go with a dj. You're gonna want breaks in the music for cake, speech, etc. and it'll be a pain to go over and turn off the speakers, then put it back on. And the transitions from song to song won't be smooth. I personally say do the dj.

Yeah - you know what? I really agree. I want the DJ. haha. And it's not really that we can't afford it as much as we just thought we were sorta being clever or something and throwing the idea out there.

IMO I wouldn't do this...I feel like the DJ is important to get a feel for the mood of the crowd and play songs accordingly, the DJ can take song requests, can make any and all announcements (your first dance, when dinner is being served..), get the crowd up and dancing,... etc. Who would be in 'charge' of the ipod?

This is just my opinion tho!

You definitely should go with a DJ. It is not worth the savings with all the extra work you will have to do to keep your ipod going. Plus people like the announcements and all the extras a DJ can provide.
P.S. As the others have said who will be 'in charge' of the ipod. Just too much work. You also need someone to orchestrate the garter/bouquet toss, cake cutting, introductions, etc. A DJ/MC brings it all together.

Thanks so much, Ladies. I definitely agree. I feel like I keep hearing people doing this though. Has anyone else heard of this?

I'd go with a DJ. I've been to a party with iPod music and there was absolutely no dancing. Without the DJ/MC pumping eveyrone up, it just became a dinner party. A wedding is a once in a lifetime thing - so I'd go for the DJ.

In my opinion, I would spend the money on a DJ. I think it might just sound like background music and people won't feel the need to get up and dance. Having an emcee there usually gets people up out of their seats.

If you do choose to do the ipod thing I have a quick bit of advice. Make sure to go through EVERY song on the ipod. FBIL set up an ipod for a party and it worked out awesomely, except he didn't go through all the songs. It was September and he had some Christmas songs on there. It wasn't too terrible, but definitely could be a little embarrassing if you have a bad song on there.

I'd definitely go for the dj. Music is so important during the reception because that is what will make your wedding fun for you and your guests. Leave it to a professional. Check out Dr. Beat Productions. Their prices are extremely reasonable, Sal, the owner, is very helpful and they do a great job for very little money. Definitely go for the dj!
