If anyone has had chest xrays for their dog, did they have to be sedated? My vet refuses to do it unless she is sedated? I belong to a canine liver message board and all the people on there never heard of this.

It depends on the dog...some dogs will lay still enough not to move. If they wiggle at all, it will ruin the picture. Sedation is popular because then they don't have to have vet techs exposed to the x-ray.

Our dog was sedated for his stomach x-ray. He was really groggy, but fine.

Coxmandi - Thanks for the response. I was starting to wonder whether my vet was the only one suggesting it. My dog is 13 and has a liver problem so that is two reason sedation is dangerous, so it is out of the question.

Thanks for the reply.

Hershey had one recently and was NOT sedated.

WC - Was it a chest xray? Did it come out clear? I think that is the problem that the vet said. I believe the vet feels it will be blurry with her breathing so hard

Actually it didn't come out great (and we eventually had an EKG done) but the doc said it's simply because you can't (like with a human) tell the dog to hold the breath ... but he still felt sedating her would not be worth it.

FM Kathy116 and see what her DH says ...

That is what my vet said. We are going to do an Echo. Actually, I did FM Kathy. She must get a lot of these FM's. She was the first one I thought of. Thanks again.
