If so, are they YOUR pediatrician for your child?

My sister is one, so I automatically assume she will be the auntie/Godmother AND the Pediatrician

Is this safe to assume?

NO!!! Don't place that pressure on your sister!!!!

My cousin is a neonatal pediatrician...and when her sister gave birth...she was there to support her sister....not to work...

ask your sister for advice...and a recommendation for a great ped...but I don't think its a line I would want to cross...

Hmmm........... Interesting Erica. Never thought of it that way.

What if she says she will be? (offers w/o me asking) Do I accept?

I personally would not...most likely nothing would happen...but what if something did...it could strain family relations...I'm sure you have all the confidence in the world in your sister...but take her recommendation in confidence...

also do you want your child to know their aunt as the person that sticks them with sharp needles?

I think if she offers...just say that you want her to be the aunt...not the ped...and ask maybe if there is someone in her practice that she would recommend

again this is JMHO from what my cousin has said...but if you do decide to use her...I'm sure everything will be fine...

I think she might be hurt if I refuse. She takes care of me alot, spoils me

But you've brought up some really good points I should think about. That's exactly what I need to consider.
Thanks

Its a bad idea to take care of your family. If anything ever went wrong, she would never forgive herself-even if you could forgive her. Let her refer you to someone. I think she would agree.

I think you need to consider that in addition to being a parent, you need to be this child's healthcare advocate. You should absolutely trust and like and admire your pediatrician (so your sis is a given), however, doctors are not gods. As the child's parent, you may find a need to question a doctor's opinion or advice, probe for more answers, etc. Could you honestly do that if it was your sister?

Also, as an aside, many health insurance policies have clauses that they will not pay for treatment provided by a family member. This may be an issue in your sister's practice for other administrative reasons.

I would ask my sister to help me pick a ped, therefore she's involved.

I agree w/Erica - esp. regarding the needle thing! Every family gathering could turn into a crying/screaming-fest for your child!

I am also of the mindset that you should do everything within your power NOT to mix family w/business or otherwise if you can help it. But, this also comes from someone who's entire family has long lived within a 10 block radius of one another Too much in each other's business!

I think it is best to keep them seperate for many reasons.. That doesn't mean she can't give you advise or answer questions... Dh is a surgeon and he is my medical textbook, but I would never have him as my surgeon...
