hello. i was wondering if you girls can help me here. my fh and i rent an apt in selden (its a basement apt in our landlords home). summer is here an we put in our energy efficient air conditioner and our landlord wants an extra $50 a month from us for it. we think that is excessive. we feel that an extra $15 a month should cover the added expense to her lipa bill. what do you think? we both work fulltime day jobs, so its only used in the evenings. she said she we could do $40 more bc we 'are harldy ever home'. i still think thats excessive. our neighbors across the hall (she has 2 separate apts in her basement) grudgingly pay the extra $50. let me know what you think a fair deal would be! ~lacey

Re: apartment and ac question
When I rented I had to pay an extra $25 per month (that was about 3 years ago) and I too was only home in the evenings. Everyone thought that was so cheap! I had a cousin who had to pay an extra $100 per month! I think $40 is probably pretty reasonable.

Re: apartment and ac question
Just judging by how much our electric bill goes up (we rent too, for now) from running the a/c at night over the summer, I would also say that is a fair amount. Then you can also feel comfortable using it as much as you want!

Re: apartment and ac question
We live in a 2nd floor apt - it gets HOT. 80-85 if no AC most warm days.
We run a 12,000BTU or 15000BTU which is a very large AC that cools living room, kitchen, diningroom. It turns on in an energy efficient setting at 75 degrees at about 3pm, to help keep my fish tank cool. We then lower it to 72 when we get home at about 7 and run it until we go to bed.
We have a smaller one in our bedroom that turns on at about 6 or 7 and we keep at 72 or 73 degrees and we run all night.
They are both very energy efficient and I'd say we used them about 75% of the days last summer. Our electric bill increased by about $30-$40 month in the summer months. I think $50 is excessive for 1 AC.
Room A/C (6,500 BTU) Energy Efficient Rating of 6.6 Monthly Hours: 180 Cost $27.91
Energy Efficient Rating of 9 Monthly Hours: 180 Cost $20.67
Energy Efficient Rating of 12 Monthly Hours: 180 Cost $15.49

Re: apartment and ac question
wow, we are really fortunate, we run the A/C constantly--only when we are home and our landlords don't charge us anything extra per month to use it. We are really blessed.....but then again they have a good deal going, we are NEVER home lol
