Apartment hunt thread

Let's start a thread where we can talk about our apartments we had looked at. I am constantly going to look at them...I just need a venting place...ANYONE else???

Well I went to 2 yesterday.
The first one...OMG the tentant was still in, it was a couple, they werent there when we saw the place but OMG were they slobs...Like i mean i am not the neatest person but their garbage was overflowing to the floor!! and the counter was filled with food and FLIES! IT WAS HORRIBLE
but u have to ook past that, THe bedroom was HUGE HUGE I could fit all my furniture in that one room! However the livingroom was quite tight. We have a couch and a love seat and a huge tv so we couldnt take this apartment

Then we went to one that a 2 bdrm apart. We saw a room that we thought was the bedroom adn she was like o this is the livingroom then we saw a bedroom which she warned us that one o the bedrooms was small so we assumed that was the small beddroom she was like this is the master...my daughter had her queen size bed in here....In my head I was LIKE NO WAY! then she showed us the small bedroom...I was like ummm thanks we'll give u a call and left

UGH
We have another one to look at today at 1230 a 2 bdrm...finger crossed

Anyone else wanaa share their apt hunting eperiences???

Re: Apartment hunt thread

We looked at one, the real estate lady drove us literally past a dump (broken down cars were dropped off on the curb, a boat on the curb with no trailer). We get to the house and we were like ok, this isn't bad. So we ring the bell and we hear in the most hickish sort of way 'MA, .......MAAAA!!!!! GET THE DOOR!!!!' this 100+ year old looking woman in a mumu with stains allover it with a walker answers the door. We enter and there is her 50ish year old son with a wife beater tank top sitting on the couch drinking his tall boys. (I wanted to leave right then and there, but I figured maybe they have a gold plated bath tub upstairs or somthing). So, We go up the stairs to an accordian style door with no lock on it. There were about 3 cats with their paws underneath it (In retrospect they were probably trying to claw their way out). We open the door to most wonderful smell of mildew and cat pee you could imagine. The bathroom ceiling was all sunken and mildewy. There was junk all over. Even more cats.

Needless to say when we got back to the curb scratching ourselves from the heeby jeebies, we told the real estate lady that she should lose her liscense for showing us such a place and to lose our number. (She had been there previously with another possible tenant).

Re: Apartment hunt thread

We went to so many places! We finally found one that we LOVED on crag's list and signed a lease last week. We originally wanted to live in the Famingdale area, but the only complex we could find that had rentals was old, and the apartment was really small. We looked in North Massapequa / Plainview, and the wanted a ton of money for the apartments. At first we only wanted a complex, but after looking for a few months we decided to give looking in houses a try. We saw a few bad ones. On had a mirror blacksplash in the kitchen, and no eating area. You would have to eat dinner on the couch. The apartment had one closet, and the landlords spoke NO English. None at all. The real estate agent tried to convince us that that was a good thing, because they won't bother us, but we didn't but that. What happens if there is a leak, or a fuse blows? We can't tell him, we have no way of communicating with them. After quite a few horror's we found a wonderful place, that we can't wait to move into!

i'm a realtor so this is bad for business...

GO TO CRAIGSLIST.COM! you get the best deals on there! my friend just got a 1 bedroom in a hi rise in Mineola for $1200/mo includes all. He only pays electric and has a w/d in his apartment.

Ugh...reading this thread is making me relive some my past experiences...UGH!

My recommedation is to rent LEGAL! We learned the hard way and were 'evicted' 4 mths prior to our wedding. We did not need the extra stress. We vowed to only rent legal apts and we found the BEST apt we could ever find.
My other recommendation is to check the pennysavers and hometown newspapers too. I noticed our apt was only listed in the hometown newspaper...not Newsday, Craigs List, etc. They originally wanted to list with a realtor friend, but the friend steered them to doing it in the local pennysaver type paper for a couple of reasons...One with realtor fees...the people would have to shell out a lot of money, also the most important one was they wanted a local nice couple (like yourselves)...they didn't want to be bothered with the Section 8 calls, etc. We were truly blessed with this apt. Our landlords in such a short time became family. Don't give up...you are a landlords dream of a tenant and they will be blessed to have you!

Re: Apartment hunt thread

Apartment hunting is such a pain!! We looked for 2 months. We went to one apartment that we really liked and we told the landlord we would take it. Then then went on to tell us that another couple was coming on the weekend to look at it. so we should wait. Then they went into the ground rules. He was already threating us that our cars were not to be in the drive way (duh like we would park there) and we should never be in the back yard. There was a bunch of more drama that with the other perspective tenets and the landlord, which ended up in a very nasty email for no reason from the landlord!! All I can say is thank god we waited because we are in a great first floor apartment with a big patio and so many things included (Cable, heat, electric, water, and optimum online) Plus my landlord said she would not raise the rent for 3 years!! We plan on buying a house in a year.
So my words of wisdom are keep looking and if the landlord says one thing that throws you off (even if the apartment is nice) don't bother. It takes time and some crappy places before you find the one!! I will keep my eyes open for you! ( I am in the Massapequa/Farmingdale area)

Re: Apartment hunt thread

If you can help it at all, do not live in a basement!! my FH and I made the mistake of renting a basement apartment in Bayside. It looked nice and sunny so we decided to take it. It was so humid, stuffy, and gross, it was awful. We could hear all of the running water because of the pipes, Plus all of the noise from upstairs. And the worst part of it all, Centipedes apparently they like humidity. we had to deal w/ this for a year because we signed a lease. We saved every darn penny and bought a coop so we could get the heck out of there.

Re: Apartment hunt thread

If you are looking in an area with lots of apartment buildings, I highly recommend walking or driving around, go in the lobbies and see if there is a management company phone number listed. Then, call the management company and see if they have anything available. Even if they don't in that building, they may have something in another building. And it takes some of the guesswork out--at least you know you like the outside of the building and the area it is in!

Plus, you should not have to pay any sort of fee when dealing with a management company.

Also, these tend to be legal apartments. This worked for me in NYC anyway, not so sure how things work on Long Island for rentals.
