Re: Apartment Hunting!!!!
we went on MLSLI.com and first searched by location and price. then we picked whatever we wanted to see - well called the agent to see the places.

This. Also found my on Craigslist. Try looking for apartments by owners first, to save yourself a months rent on a brokers fee.

First things first.. work out a budget of both of your bills and budget in what your utilities will be and expenses like food shopping, laundry, gas etc. That will help determine what rent you can afford.
Craiglist can be a big help, Any apt. I've found I found through Craigslist. I'm not a fan of realtors for renting apt.
Be prepared to have at least 3 or 4 grand to move in.(it might be a lot less but when we were looking in LI a few places wanted up to 4K just to move in) First months, last months and security not including an agent fee if you go through a Realtor are what a lot of people are asking for and if you have pets some are added a cleaning deposit and be ready for a credit check and have references.
Know what you are looking for (accepts pets, near the train and shopping, nice area, use of yard stuff like that) that will help you avoid seeing apt.'s you'd never want.
It's actually pretty easy one you have your budget set. That is the most important step in the process. It can be a little over whelming if you aren't finding anything and you really need something, you might have to adjust what you're looking for.

Re: Apartment Hunting!!!!
Ditto on using Craigslist , we used it for our last 2 apartments. Unless you are looking at a complex in which case just google apartment complex's on long island. Any chance you want a 1 bed basement in miller place ? LOL we are moving in oct and have to tell my landlord still.

Re: Apartment Hunting!!!!
I would first decide w/ location and price. And then use MLSLI, find a realtor, or Craigslist. We found the apartment we rented through Craigslist, BUT it was a pain in the butt because most of the ones on Craigslist are fake ads :-/
P.S. Are you coming to Queens?

Re: Apartment Hunting!!!!
GET YOUR CREDIT SCORE CHECKED- many places require good credit?
THEN -
your budget - what can u spend?
where do you wanna live? close to work, close to family? Nassua/ Suffolk / north shore/ south shore?
what do you need? smoking ok? pets ok? 1 bedroom - studio- private entrance- basement?
search apartment through all media -( craigs list, a Realtor, online)
then start looking at places til ya find one you love.

Re: Apartment Hunting!!!!
First figure out how much you want/can spend a month on rent and all the other bills you may have. Some apartments don't include utilities so you may have to factor that in the price.
Next figure out where you guys want to live.
Then check out craigslist or even hotspots.com. The only bad thing about hotspots.com is a bunch of the listings we found on there were already gone.
We originally didn't want to pay the broker's fee but ended up with an apartment with that fee. We found our apartment in a matter of a little over a month so I wouldn't wait long to start looking. We lucked out and found an apartment that includes everything but internet and we have use of the patio and bbq. Our move in day was last Friday which gives us a couple of weeks before the wedding to move in all of our stuff and buy furniture before the wedding.
