Apartment: to rent or not?

Original post by julz33

When we bought this house and saw it had an apartment, at first we were excited to rent it because the moeny would definitely help, although we didn't NEED that extra income. Now that we both have new jobs and bigger salaries we definitely don't NEED the extra money. Ray wants to rent it for now because we don't need the extra space in the house right now and he looks at it like extra money for us to put into savings. As time goes by and we are getting closer to moving into the house and out of the apartment I am getting nervous about having someone live in my house. I am afraid of them burning it down or something crazy like that!
What would you do?

You are very lucky to not need the extra money, however it is always smart to add more to the savings account. Why dont you try it on a six month basis. You can interview possible tenants closely and make sure you rent to someone who will be respectful of your home. You may not always want to rent, but just think of how nice it could be to save extra money.

I think I would rent. Always good for the extra $$
Definitley do background checks and everything possible before you do rent though.
Right now, I am renting from my uncle. We are never home, and they are never home. I see them maybe once a week.
He only rents out to family. Do you have any family members who would be interested?

I am completely opposite to all the other posters! I would not rent out an apartment in my house.

I say RENT IT!!! Just be very careful in selecting a tenant. Since you don't have to rush financially just take your time finding the perfect tenant. Use that $ for savings, or my personal favorite vacations!! JMO

You and your vacations!
I don't need the money... but who doesn't want extra money! Weighing the pros and cons though it isn't really worth it to me because of all the things that could go wrong
Ray really wants to rent it though... I think we will try short term leases to start.
Now is there anyone in the town of Brookhaven that rents an apartment in their house that I could FM for more info?
