appraisals

Where did you girls take your ring to get appraised so you can take out an insurance policy? I have so been slacking and my good friend just lost one of her side diamonds on her ering today and I am totally freaked out and want to get my ring insured ASAP!

Also, any recommendations on insurance companies? FH do not have homeowners (because we are not yet...LOL) and we don't have renters insurance...the only insurance we have is car and life.....can I put my ring under one of those policies????

THANKS!

I have my ring covered under my renter's policy. FH gave me the appraisal the jeweler gave him when he bought my ring, but any reputable jeweler can give you an appraisal.

Personally, the right thing to do is get your ring appraised by an outside party- not your jeweler. Your jeweler will fudge on the appraisal report sometimes. You want to get the most honest appraisal so you know you're not getting screwed.

I would also go to another jeweler to get it appraised to make sure it's worth what they sold it to your FH for. I got my ring insured by Jewelers Mutual... I dont have any homeowners insurance either... u dont need it for that. I only pay like $130 or $140 a yr.

Re: appraisals

I'm not sure who my FH used to appraise the ring, but I know he was recommended by our jeweler at Michael C. Fina in the city and was a block away in the diamond district (47th Street btw 5th & 6th Aves). There are a couple of appraisers there b/c of the area. Just make sure you don't let the ring leave your site. If someone tells you that you need to come back later and leave the ring, find someone else!! My FH told me the appraiser appraised it right then and there in front of him. I think it took about 15-20mins.

As for insurace, we have Jewelers Mutual. If you own a house, you can add a jewelry rider to your homeowners policy and that would be cheaper, but I would be careful about adding it to renter's insurance. I heard they don't completely cover it so just double check before deciding. I think a LOT of the brides on here use Jewelers Mutual though. I think we pay about $200-something every 2-3 months to insure it.

FH got an appraisal where he got my ring but we decided to take it to the Jewlery Judge on old country road in garden city ... he was awesome! he basically told us that FH got a great deal and he appraised the ring for a little more than FH paid but still not as much as the original appraisal from the where FH bought the ring. I would go to him he is awesome haha the jewlery judge

FH and me went to the same place, his name is Barry Block....what a nice guy, he was really good. He appraised my ring for a few thousand more than FH paid for it, we were so happy about that. He charges based on the price of your appraisal too, it's pretty good.

We went to Macys on 34th street and they were great, she said that FH got an amazing deal. We have Jewelers Mutual. The place where FH bought my ring said that they are very reputable.

FH took the ring to the Jewelry Judge before he gave it to me to be appraised and we have it insured under Jeweler's Mutual.
