appropriate engagement party gift?

believe it or not, none of my friends that got married in like the last 10 or 12 years had engagement parties, so I am clueless. My cousin, who is 22 I think, is having an engagement party in the 'private room' at the patchogue diner or something like that tomorrow from 2-5. I got her a nice wedding-ish type of album/frame for about $20 to go along with cash - is $100 enough or is that cheap? Thanks!

I think $100 is fine for an engagement party.

I have read in so many etiquette books that the purpose of the engagement party is not to get gifts - its to introduce and mingle the families and celebrate the engagement! Any gift is more than generous!

For my engagment party, I only received gifts- no money. I thought that was the norm but I guess not.

that's perfect. most of our family either gave us a gift...some from our registry which was awesome and some just put gift baskets together...while others gave money. your gift sounds great

For our engagement party we received between 50 to 125.
