??Approval by diocese?? (outside ceremony) please help a '10 bride!

Hello all 2009 brides.

Congratulations on your past or upcoming weddings.

I am in need of some assistance and wonder whether any of you have had this happen to you and how you resolved it..

SOOOO

FH and I would like to have our wedding outside on the grounds of our reception site. FH's 2nd cousin is a monsignor (priest) in cali and we would like him to do our ceremony. Now he told us that we needed to get the okay from the diocese.

Now I am concerned that they may say no and that our wedding will not be recognized in the church.

HELP!

any thoughts? knowledge? advice? it will be GREATLY appreciated :)

hugs to all

The actual wedding at the reception hall won't be recognized by the church, but you can get it recognized after the fact. You just have to do a series of things and I think have another ceremony in the church at a later date.

Two of my cousins recently went through this. One got married 6 years ago at her RH and just this past Easter got remarried in the church.

The other had a church ceremony a couple of months after their outdoor ceremony.

The Catholic Church usually does not recognize marriages performed outside of a church because marriage is a sacrament. You will probably have to get remarried in the church at a later point. The church is not too fond of people doing this however.

I had several priests refuse to do our outdoor ceremony (including a family member and someone at the church I volunteer for!) but it can be done if a priest is willing. Our sacrament is being performed by a priest who is ordained as a bishop as well and will be recognized in the church so it all depends but that's legwork on their part not yours.
