Okay I am curious to see if any of you had to go through this process.
We decided to have our wedding at the site, we love the grounds and want an outside wedding....NOW, our priest is actually FH's second cousin, who will fly out from California for the ceremony. Now today FH spoke to him and told him that we needed to speak with the Diocese to make sure he could do the ceremony and that our wedding would be valid in the eyes of the church as it is not taking place in a church.
I am freakin' out.......HELP!

i believe that would be protocol thought you rarely hear people getting married outside of the church being acknowleged as a married couple to the church good luck.

Check with the church but from my understanding a marriage needs to be performed inside of a church to be valid in the Cathloic church. I would call your church and check, tomorrow is Ascension Thursday though so do not be alarmed if no one is there. Good luck

Re: ?????approval by the diocese?????
Yup it's true. Usually, marriages not performed in the church are not recognized by the church. But they DO make exceptions.
Getting approval from the diocese is easy. I had to do this to marry FH as I'm Catholic and he's Episcopalian. We are getting married in a Catholic church and I needed approval to marry a 'non-catholic.'
It was simple. Just a piece of paper with each of our names, birthdates, addresses, telephone numbers. Then I had to sign it, the priest then signed it and sent it to the diocese for us. He contacted us about a week later to let us know he had gotten the official 'ok.'

Re: ?????approval by the diocese?????
It's up to the discretion of the priest whether or not to do it on site, etc. It will be recognized if they do a Catholic ceremony. I have a priest in the family but he refuses to do it outside of the church, we are using someone else though because we want a traditional Catholic ceremony but on the beach.

Re: ?????approval by the diocese?????
I dont want to totally freak you out, but my cousin is a priest and my brother works for the Brooklyn diocese and from what they both told me is that you cant get married outside the church and it be recognized by the Catholic Church. It has to be on consecrated ground. I wanted to get married on the beach but couldnt when we found out it wont be recognized. You can double check about the approval, but by my sources say no.
I am sorry

Re: ?????approval by the diocese?????
SOMETIMES- on rare rare occassion- you can find a Catholic priest that will perform the ceremony outside the church. However, I do not know of any and I also am not sure if that would make it 'accepted' in the eyes of the Church.
ETA: Even if your marriage isn't recognized by the Church, you can still baptize your children. My parents were married in the RH by a rabbi, and I was baptized in the Catholic Church.

Re: ?????approval by the diocese?????
I know you're freaking out and all, but are you tied into having the person that you know from California do your ceremony? Cause if not, I can give you the contact information for the Bishop who is marrying us.
Rather than asking us all about exceptions, perhaps you can just call the diocese.

Re: ?????approval by the diocese?????
I believe it's called a dispensation. We are in the process of getting one. Ask your priest about it!
Matrimonial Dispensations: is an act whereby in a particular case a lawful superior grants relaxation from an existing law.

It is true. the church only recognizes a marriage at the church. you can get dispensation, but it's not always easy.
