I've been posting the last few weeks re: different apts & such. Well bf told his parents this weekend our plans & his mom said bf's uncle has an apt that would be available to us.
Pros: NO RENT, only utilities, 2 bedrooms instead of 1
Cons: not so great area of Queens (we were going to live in Suffolk), uncle would know our comings/goings, if we argue, etc., the apt. has been empty for 20 years (totally outdated)--I think we'd be 'allowed' to redo what we wanted, but it may cause some 'stir'
I mean bf is sort of letting me decide. IF I knew it was only for 1 year and then either we'd buy a house or move to OUR own apt. I think I'd be okay, but I'm afraid once we are there, we're going to be 'stuck' & bf/fh will say we saved 20k this year, let's wait it out another year...
I can definitely see the benefit...I mean being able to save 15k in rent is HUGE, esp. with having to plan a wedding & saving for a house & we'd be able to go on vacations & buy NICE furniture, etc.
What do you ladies think?

yes, where in queens? I grew up in queens so i may be able to help you judge....i wouldnt be comfortable with his uncle knowing our wherabouts, hearing us argue, etc but if it meant being able to save for a house or wedding, it might be worth the sacrifice.

Well, I was born/raised in Queens (Bayside), I now live in Whitestone.
His uncle lives in Queens Village (I'm familiar w/ the area & such) & almost took a job in his church's school (O.L. Lourdes). He's off Springfield by Jamaica Ave.
His uncle has a legit 2 family house, but no one has lived upstairs in 20 years & his uncle is VERY set in his ways (what time he gets up, what he does on every day, etc.)
I'm tossed. I also don't want to cause hard feelings between his parents & us B4 the wedding. They are really pushing or saying how it would be silly NOT to take the apt.
I don't know.....

Well, on the one hand a year goes by SO FAST!! and it would be awesome to save so much money!!
But, arent' you unsure about where you might work next year? If you were looking in Suffolk for a teaching job that would be quite a hike. Can you hold off deciding until the summer? It's not as if someone's going to snatch up an apartment that's been empty for 20 years, right?

I think I would go for it, especially if you can save money for a house/wedding. Saving money is hard and a year does go by very quickly.

I suppose...its just so old & I guess IF I tell bf/fh 1 year MAX it'll be okay.
Maybe :)
Thanks ladies, we'll see...

I would do it, if worse comes to worse you could always move out! It will be great to save all that money for a year, and the year does go fast.

I agree! Move in and start saving... and if things aren't working out then just look for a new place! We lived with our parents before the wedding to save and you would not believe the amount of money we were able to save in less than 2 years. Don't you have to commute to NYC anyway? That is a much shorter commute than suffolk!

True Julie....but I'll only be in NYC until June. His uncle is pretty religious, so that might be an issue too (living together b4 we are officially married)--in his eyes.
We'll see. Ray & I are going to talk it over tonight.
