white flour? Even whole wheat, pumpernickel and rye? My honey just told me that they only throw in enough of the other flour to add flavor and color but all bagels are white flour based.

If it's just a 'wheat' bagel, that could be true....but if it says 'whole wheat' it shouldn't be....

Yes, that's true, from what I know. Most commercial bagels shops start with a base of all purpose flour or bread flour, and add other different types to it for flavor. However, health food stores sell bagels that are made with 100% whole wheat or spelt flour, if you're really looking to avoid white flour. I've had both and unfortunately the healthy ones lack a lot of the yummy taste & texture of the commercial kind.
yes...you have to look for 'whole wheat' otherwise 'wheat' can just be caramel coloring

Lunatrek is correct! I just called 3 different bagel places and they said ALL bagels have white flour as a base. They should make that known because here you think you are eating better and you just aren't!

Re: Are all bagels made with
whole wheat and rye are the only two made with out white flour
fyi...that goes for all bread...you need to look for 'whole' wheat...if you look in the ingredients and see enriched flour...thats a big no-no
I have found Orowheat bread...and thomas's WW bagels as good choices

Re: Are all bagels made with
Yes...but I think whole wheat doesn't have white flour or it's made with less. I used to work in a bagel store, but years ago. But all other flavors are made with white flour. Even bialys (which are bagels with the holes smooshed in and they are not boiled before baking).

Re: Are all bagels made with
I used to work at a bagel store, and ALL of our bagels were made with all white flour. The bagels other than plain used food dye for the color. Rye, wheat, and pumpernickel were dyed, even the swirls in the cinnamon raisin were dye. I'm not sure if that's a common practice, but that's how we did it.
