We're not inviting everyone, some of the women are friends of friends, distant family, etc.

No. Traditionally, only close friends and family of the bride are invited. Today, the list may have expanded...I'll be inviting my close friends and family, FH's immediate family and that's about it. MAYBE some of FH's closest friends wives, gf's, etc. but only the ones I hang out with on a regular basis.

I did not invite every female. I did not invite my co-workers or FHs female relatives or FHs friend's spouses because I'm not close to any of them.

This is actually making me relieved. The only thing is I had written all of the females on his guest list down and had him remove the ones he thought did not have to be invited. He did but he told me that he really wasn't sure of the proper ettiquette (I am not either) so he told me to ask his sister (who is a friend of mine). She said to invite everybody! This brings us to almost 90 people (a lot of whom I have never met) and I am not comfortable in big crowds. In fact, the only reason I am going to survive my big wedding is that he is going to be with me.

Now you girls are saying that I don't have to invite everyone so I feel better, I guess I will just talk to his sister about it honestly.

Well for my showers, we made a list of all the women and then went through and took certain people off for various reasons so we ended up with a crowd of family and friends. There were a few people my mom is friends with who are invited to the wedding but she just didn't feel she needed to invite to the shower.

I think the best rule of thumb is do what you feel comfortable with.

not everyone was invited to the shower--the women in both sides of the family and also close girlfriends of mine

No. I didn't invite the wives of FH's coworkers, or his friends (except for two that I actually hang out with). I accidentally forgot to include two of his aunts (which b/c they are family I thought should have been invited), but since I haven't actually met them, I didn't feel all that bad about it.

I have no idea. I gave my mom a list of my friends. Her and my FMIL will invite family.

No, unless you're having a very intimate wedding with only close family / friends.

Personally, I think it's rude to invite someone who isn't close to either the bride or the groom. You're expecting people who aren't that close to the bride / groom to spend even more money on more presents. This is just my personal opinion, though, as I've been to showers with well over a hundred people, not all of whom were close to the couple... Really, I think you should invite (or rather, whoever is throwing the shower should invite) only those women who are very close to the bride (or the groom). The bride's family and close friends, as well as FH's family and close friends - sometimes the wives / girlfriends of FH's friends if they are people you see on a regular basis and are close to.

That's just my $.02. I'm sure others have different opinions on the matter.
