Are Strapless Dresses allowed in catholic Church

We picked out my bridesmaid dresses and my mother told me that they might not be able to wear strapless dressed in a Catholic Church? Has anyone gotten married in Ozone Park St. Mary Gates of Heaven?

I really need help.

Ugh....If I was told by the church that I couldn't wear the gown I wanted to wear for my wedding day, or that the dresses I picked out for my BM weren't okay to wear, I would seriously think about switching religion lol

If they have a rule about that, I think that is ridiculous!

My brother got married there in June of last year and we all grew up in that church, there is no rule on the strapless gowns. They perfer you not to because your in the eyes of the Lord, YADA YADA, but it isn't a big deal at all.

I've seen lots of people wear strapless dresses during weddings in the Catholic church.

They certainly have there rules. I guess its each individual church though. My BM's must wear shawls. And i thought my veil would be enough to cover me (since my dress is strapless) but now they are giving me a hard time about that too. You better ask your church.

I've never heard of that. After all, this is 2008, not 1908. And people wear shorts, tank tops, and flip flops to church. I'd ask the church themselves.

you are allowed but they perfer you don't. its supposed to be a reverend occasion so they feel people should dress accordingly.

my girls have strapless dresses and i told them they have to wear shawls b/c i dont feel it's appropriate. i have a strapless dress and i was going to get a bolero but my veil will be covering my shoulders so the church said it was acceptable.

My sister in law got married in a catholic church and wore strapless. I dont think she even thought to ask them if it was okay. If you dont ask and they dont tell, what will they do? Stop you while you are walking down the aisle? I highly doubt that!!!

Some have said no and some yes. I asked my priest and he said make it tasteful. Now a days they don't mind.

It just depends on the bride I feel, my priest said be modest...my translation is no sholders, I've always been an oldschool and Im having cap sleeves added to my dress with snaps no at the reception I can take them out....It depends on how traditional you are, but they did say modesty and my sholders should be covered at least with a veil. I would just use shawls.. you could get pretty chiffon ones that drape nicely over thier shoulders- FM me if you can't envision what I am saying and maybe I can help you out more- good luck!

I'm assuming it depends on the church. I got married in a Catholic church, and they did not have any sitpulations about this...I wore strapless and so did my BMs. Like people have said, maybe have your girls wear pashminas or shawls for more coverage if it's an issue.

My dress and my bridesmaids dresses were strapless and I didn't ask anything beforehand I just showed up (kinda sneaky ... I know). I doubt they wouldn't have let me get married because we were wearing strapless.

I would call and ask them. My church is ok with it, but I know of some who are not
