Are you looking for a fixer-upper or something completely done up already?

Are you looking for a fixer-upper or something completely done up already?

Why?

We're looking for something to do up - DH is a great cook and really wants a kitchen done to his spec. We figure why spend the money on something that's just been redone if we're just going to rip it out anyway. Also, we want to be able to add value to a house.

Somewhere in the middle. We want to be able to move in (maybe with some painting and cleaning) but I'd like it to be 'bad enough' that it's necessary to do our own thing. I like my taste

Of course, we also can't afford the beautiful insides so it's a good thing we don't want it

We ended up buying somewhere in the middle also. Of course, in the areas we were looking we couldn't afford to buy a house that was already done up! But we just cleaned and painted so we were able to move in. The bathroom and the kitchen are horribly outdated but for something so old in reasonably decent condition. There's so much unfinished space in the house that we're able to do what we want and add quite a bit of value to the house (there's an unfinished room between the kitchen and garage and the upstairs is dormered but never completed-we can just put up walls and have 2 BR upstairs & a bath if we want). But it's fun to be able to do eveything exactly how you want it/

FI or I are looking for a fixer upper... We would like to slowly make the house 'ours'. My father runs a construction company so we have lots of close family friends that are contractors, finding trustworthy people to help us update wouldnt be a problem. BUT if a mint condition, updated and affordable house just happened to fall in our laps, I'm sure we wouldnt be opposed.

We were looking for something in the middle. With the price of houses we didnt want to get soemthing for say 350K and then have to sink another 100K into it! We happened upon a house that was more completely done than fixer upper. Our house had 2 new baths, a pretty new kitchen, refinished wood floors and professional landscaping plan. We are going to gut the den but other than that all we did was paint.

It worked out perfect for our situation because my mom got very ill after we moved and we really didnt have ANY time to dedicate to the house. For the first 7 months we lived in the house all we had time to do was paint our bedroom and the computer room! Finally at the beginning of 2005 we found some time to do the rest of what we wanted to do. So for us having a move in ready house was the best thing!

Our next house though we are looking for somethign that needs more work because we figure its our forever house so we want to do everything in our way!

We were looking for something already done because we are too lazy to have work done and deal with all that

In the house we found we do have to finish the basement but that is easy

In Colorado we'll be looking for something that's already done up. DH is FAR from a handyman

We got a handyman's special for sure! Unfortunately, neither one of us is a handyman - but hey, we'll learn!

We are buying a house thats in move in condition, but it needs a little work...The bathroom needs some updating and some other things need to be done, but other than that the rest of the work will be us just personalizing the house to our taste.

this was our approach as well but we are quickly learning that a lot of work and $$ goes into even the littlest of things (taking down wallpaper in the kitchen and painting took a good 3-4 days, we had estimated 1 day as it was only a small space)

we are currently fixing the eye sores and then will start thinking about what we will redo. the plan is to pay off the home equity line and the borrow against it again to make the improvements we have in mind (redo kitchen and add bathroom)

we went back and forth - condo vs. single family detatched - for a long time. the condos we were looking at didn't have that much to do and we would have had more space. we decided on the house because we wanted more outdoor living space and a chance to learn from our mistakes with a smaller home.

good school and good location- with a little work to do- a little being like 30-40k

i dont think id buy a handyman special - but to get the house just as you want it - many cosmetic things were done.

we bought a home in good condition that we can just update over time. Right now its clean and neutral but dated with its appliances. That's what we could afford, a newer home in the area with all the updates was just way too much.
