FH and I keep talking about this. When we get married I will be moving from Staten Island to LI. We are looking for a place to live and I am looking for a teaching position in LI. I am scared of change. I will be moving away from my family and friends and starting a new job where I don't know anyone.
I have no doubts about getting married. I just wish I didn't have to change my whole life. We are planning to live by FH's family and he will be keeping his job so it is not much transition for him. Am I being ridiculous?

Re: Are you scared?
I would feel the same way. Last year my mom almost moved to Florida, she was having a house built and me and fh were going to follow, b/c I couldn't imagine not being by my family. But you won't be too far so I know you will adjust, it just might take some time, that s all

its normal and LI life is diff from SI life hahaha... but you adjust and you arent that far from SI. depending on the area you are planning on moving to - going back and forth to SI shouldnt be too bad. we go all the time and my fam comes here all the time.

yeah its hard, but honestly just at first. Maybe the first month to get used to it and then you adjust. Plus you'll have FH and you'll be excited about your new life together so that will help. I need to tell myself this too lol

Re: Are you scared?
I go back and forth now and it's pretty hellish. Takes an hour and a half without traffic. I come out to LI every week, usually for the weekend, sometimes other days too. It takes at least 2 hours to get to work and about 3 after work.
Life is the same here or there, it's just the fact that I am moving away from everyone. My mom and grandma live in NJ.

FH is gonna go through the same transition moving from Far Rockaway to SI but hes happy about it. He goes through alot in his moms house so he cant wait to leave. He knows SI very well and likes it here. But it will be hard in a way because hes been in Far Rock his whole life.

Re: Are you scared?
I am extremely close to my mother, so it's going to KILL me!!
Right know we are living with my parents in the basement..so we'll be REAL happy to get out of here, but at the same time I am going to miss it. I have a big family, theres 8 of us living here..I can't imagine going into an apt where it'll just be the two of us. There's definatly pluses to it..but I'm scared it won't feel like 'home'..
On the up side of things though, thats what marriage is. Two people building another whole world together. It'll take time to adjust but once you do start building your own life together, things will make sense again!

Have you ever read the book 'Who Moved My Cheese?' by Dr. Spencer Johnson? It is a great book all about transitions and life changes. My sister reccomended it to me a few months back when I was feeling overwhelmed about everything myself.

I think its only normal to feel that way! change takes some getting used to, and can be stressful in the beginning

Re: Are you scared?
When i moved from Valley stream to Massapequa Park - it was an adjustment too i used to be 5 min from FH and saw him everyday to now only on weekends and a 20-25 min commute..
but you will adjust - can FH get a job in SI? or maybe you can move to queens instead as a middle point. have you talked to FH about how you feel?

Re: Are you scared?
I moved from B'klyn to LI 3 years ago and it was pretty difficult. It was our first year living together and the financial strain was crazy. Also I couldn't see my friends as much. But I got used to it and I'm starting to feel like part of the community.

Re: Are you scared?
Moving is always hard. I always go into panic when i move. Also changing jobs can be really hard. And getting married on top of it.....it is totally understandable that you are scared. But you will adjust. Most people go through exactly what you are going through.

I have talked to FH. He is a cop in Manhattan. We both decided to live in LI. I like Staten Island, but want more land. So, I am just overwhelmed.

Re: Are you scared?
You are not alone! I am very excited about getting married and starting a life with FH and I always knew it would be hard to leave home b/c I love my parents. Unfortunately, my father passed away last year and now it is making me feel even worse leaving my mom (although my sister will still be at home), but now I know it will be even harder to leave.
I was actually practicing my new last name today (13 letters!) and I was getting very overwhelmed as well! So many things change, all for good, but none the less they change! However, with time we will all be fine!
