Or does the 'service charge' cover that?

The extra 20% they are adding onto my per person charge best be covering that..

I would not tip them.

We didn't tip them....actually I really never thought about it...but I agree your extra 20% per person should be covering that

Usually the guests tip the bartender and valet guys. Bartenders that work in catering typically get $30 for the entire party so tips are the only way they make any money. If you request no tip cup, then you should tip them yourself. Otherwise I think that you are covered.

Seriously, all of this tipping is driving me crazy. That better be what the 18% service charge is for. Enough already. Everyone wants a tip. Actually my perosnal favorite is the washroom attendant... I think I had only one attendant actually hand me a towel. All of the rest sat there doing nothing staring at their tip cup. Sorry, but this is a sore point with me and I was a waitress for five years.

I'm with you! These people are bleeding me dry! 18% should be enough!!!

I know our 18% only covers the wait staff. If we want to let the guests tip the bartender/valet/coat check/bathroom person then we can, or we can ask them not to put buckets out and tip them ourselves... That's just our hall though- I don't know how other places work!

Bartenders & Waitstaff in every catering hall work extremly hard and most guests don't even think twice about tipping.
Remember besides the Chef & Kitchen help we are the backbone to your wedding

We are not tipping them and we do not want tip jars anywhere for our reception.

We are allowing them in the bathroom because they said the woman supplies the stuff for the ladies room hereself. Who knows if that is true.

I have to tip my maitre D, bridal attendant and bar captain so that 18% better take care of everyone else because they aint getting anymore out of me,

You don't have to do anything
Tips are entirley up to your guests, the respectful ones will tip with no problem

tip jars are one of my BIGGEST pet peeves at formal affairs...

18% at my hall covers service charge (not grat.) which essentially means that it covers the waitstaff/bartenders salary - not tip. We are tipping waitstaff and bartenders and valets our selves - we are not going to have tip cups on the bar (IMO Tacky!). They will prob. get tips from guests anyway, but we are tipping them too. I would ask your hall if 18% added on is for grat. or service charge?

Yes I am

is this standard that the 18 or 20% does not include tipping all staff working on your wedding- or, does it depend on your venue?

Yes I am

so from your experience, what do people 'normally' do? and do people do a better job if they think they will get a tip?

i tip when the service is 'above and beyond', unfortunately, i feel a lot of places don't value the same things i do and consequently i am repeatedly disappointed...

what do you think is a 'good tip' for weddings?

ETA: my venue stated that the 20% directly goes to staff and there is a separate MD fee included so no tips are expected.

I don't plan on tipping, the 18% includes the staff.

this is not true ....i have worked for caters and normally we got about $100 for the shift and if they tipped we would get it also

$30 is what we usually get in a bar for an 8 hour shift

DITTO!
they are adding on 18% for a reason. If it wasn't a 'tip' why wouldn't they just have it in the 'fee'. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhh so annoying!

I can empathize, I was a waitress all throughout college and Grad School, so I konw how important tips are, but seriously... EVERYONE and their MOM wants a tip from us on our Wedding! we're goign to be broke as it is BEFORE all this tipping!

Sorry for the vent.
