Aren't you supposed to smile while taking pictures?

Aren't you supposed to smile while taking pictures?

Yesterday I was with my family and we were looking at pictures from my shower.

My FMIL is in quite a few of them. Whenever it is a posed picture she is NOT smiling more of like an uncomfortable grimace. In the candid ones she is smiling somewhat. In fact she hardly ever smiles in pics. Now it is starting to bother me.

I told my family that I am concerned that with the wedding pics. Everyone will be smiling and she will have this scowl on her face. My family says that I am making a big deal over nothing. The woman really does not like pics but does them because she has to.

Am I being mean?

Don't sweat it.
No one really looks at anybody but you in the pics anyway.
If this is the way she is all the time, nothing you could do about it and no reason to stress yourself.
You and your brand new hubby are the only ones who really need to look happy

does she have messed up teeth or something maybe?

don't worry about it.. it's a reflection of herself, not you..

Please don't get mad at me... ...but I think you're being a little too hard on your FMIL. Not everyone is photogenic...not everyone likes having their pictures taken and I don't think that there is anything that can be done (unless she is purposely trying to sabotage your pics...but do you think that is the case?)

If you think you can politely talk to her about your concerns, without starting a war, then by all means do so.

But, I don't think it's going to get you very far...if the woman does not like having her picture taken, there's no way that a forced smile is going to look any better.

Relax...your pics will be beautiful...even if she's grimacing!!! The ones that will really matter are the ones of you and your husband...just make sure the two of you are SMILING all day...because the camera is ALWAYS going to be on you two!

Good Luck to you!

i agree with marcella, none of it is a reflection of you..
has she seen those pics? maybe you could show her pics from your shower, and casually ask her?

I won't sweat it.

I guess I am making too big a deal out of it.

Well.. It should be funny in the future.. knowing her and thinking 'Just her way, not to smile in photos'

Sneak a few of her grinning ear to ear during the ceremony or dance.. just to set you off in giggles.

My step mother and I absolutely without a doubt hate eachother completely and utterly. Years ago we decided to be civil for my father's sake. That includes smiling (dang it). Usually you catch photos of her with her nose in the air at my graduation, 15th birthday, brothers wedding, nephews birth and so forth. We, my brother and I laugh, because all the other photos show her in tears of joy (oh please).

At least yours is the other way around (i hope).

Just can't wait for my wedding *sigh* I wonder if I can get her food sick before the big day... hrmm..

I hate that we hug and say I love you and all that bs.. Wish she wouldn't come.. smiles or not!

My FMIL and I love each other to death, no ill feelings at all.

As I said before I am just getting bent out of shape for no reason.

I'm sure she is very happy for you both. Some people are just very uncomfortable about smiling. My husband feels funny smiling for pictures...luckily he got over it for our wedding. Maybe she's just uncomfortable with her smile. Try not to take offense to it. Hopefully she will be overwhelmed with joy at your wedding and it will come naturally.

Don't worry about it. My dad doesn't smile in pictures at all. You can tell he is happy by looking at his eyes. His eyes smile. Unless people tell him to smile, he won't do it.
Don't worry. When your photographer does the 'posed' pics he will probably say Everyone smile! If she doesn't then forget her. That is just the way she is.

Kesha, she will only be in a few pix, and you will chose the best of the worst of them. I only have 2 pix of hubby mother in our album, one of her and him dancing, one of her and him and all his bros and sis, if she is not smiling what could I do?? Not a thing, people skip over those pages to look at us I hope she smiles and you get great pix. The important people will be smiling you and your hubby

LOL Marcella! I was going to say the same thing, does she have bad teeth? People with bad teeth usually keep their lips locked shut in photos.

I don't think you are being mean, but I don't think you should stress this, because there is really nothing you can do about it. Bringing it up to her may make her grimace even more. Good luck but you may just have to take your chances & make sure she's got plenty of drinks at the reception - maybe that'll lighten her mood!Q

Ah, don't worry about it! No one's going to be looking at her anyway Seriously, so many people are uncomfortable taking pictures. It took me a while to relax about the pictures on the wedding day - not too many of us are used to having professional/formal pictures taken.

And for the record - my in laws look like deer caught in headlights in their pictures.

Don't sweat it. A lot of people feel awkward taking pictures, especially when so many are being taken. It will all work out.

I agree, I wouldnt worry about it. Unless she makes a face where she crosses her eyes and sticks her tongue out, whether she smiles or not will not take away from your pictures. Besides, what will she be in - maybe 4 or 5 when you get done with your album? You just make sure you & FH are ready to smile all day till your face hurts. <-- (a smile like that)
