ugh.

I love how these articles make it like women 'put off having children' like they are out galavanting around like Sex and the City or something. Never mentions that most women have to work just to keep health benefits, or that tons of women run into complications conceiving....The article is interesing, but that always bothers me.

It's interesting, but we have to look at the big picture and see if it increased or decreased in 2003. I guess a 0.2% increase is significant, especially if they haven't rise since 1959. But I'd be intrested in looking at the rates over a longer span, like 10 years. They also said other possible factors include labor induction and c-sections.

The reason why I posted this is b/c I remembered a discussion on what age at the latest should one start TTC. I didn't mean to upset anyone and felt that since its an article, it should always be take with a grain of salt.

I guess the age of the father has no contributing factor??? Seeing that a woman can have a baby on her own. Yes place more blame on women. Alina I am not saying this to you, I am speaking about the article in general.

Jenn, I thought the title of the thread was pretty clear and you didn't have to read it if you thought it might make you upset.

I do hope that some girls who are planning to wait too long will read it.

I read this too and I thought it was informative ... it gives me a different perspective on why I am 'waiting' ... but I feel that not everyone has the same luxury that I have. There are so many reasons why women today wait, and for a lot of them, it's not in their control.

But I do think that articles, like this one, are everywhere and it's pretty much known that the longer we wait, the harder it may be ... but I also think that varies by woman.

Yes, let's put more blame on women The 'article' has shed no more light than any other doctor out there preaching the same thing. It's not like it's news to us, I think what we have to remember is that this does not affect everyone over 30 or 40. For godsakes my Grandmother In-law gave birth at 47 and everything was perfect! Please times have changed and baby producing is not top priority any longer. Our careers have taken that spotlight.

Alina, It was an interesting article, thanks...

Hun it didnt upset me, but others. I spoke, thats all.
Alina, alot of ladies don't 'plan' to wait till they are older to have children, life sometimes happens that way and they have no control over it!!

Interesting, I've heard of the risks, but never knew about the rise in mortality

Thanks for the article Alina....

A question for those who have mentioned the 'blame' placed on women... Why did you feel that there was blame placed anywhere. I thought the article just stated the facts, and didn't do so in a 'blaming' way. Why did you guy feel there was blame there?

Jenn:
In that case, thank you for speaking up... And to whoever I have offended, it was not intentional. I totally understand that everyone's life is different.

I personally feel like these 'experts' are always saying that it's womens fault for waiting so long. You are correct there was nothing in there that stated the blame on women, it was just a personal observation and thought. I've always gotten in the past from family, friends and doctors (yes my dr.)- get pregnant NOW, you shouldn't wait... You're going to have your career dictate when you would have a kid??? so on and so on... It was a factual artical and not meant to offend anyone, for I was NOT offended by it. Again, it was just stating the mear facts for a percentage of women over 30. It always makes me think, but there's nothing I can do to change the situation I will be in then for I will be having our second child in my thirties.

This article is indeed depressing, but nonetheless thanks for sharing.

I just turned 31 years old. I am so not ready for a baby. I intend to wait another year or so before TTC.

Honestly I am not going to let these so called experts dictate my plans. I am of the belief of what is meant to be will be.

I saw the article on cnn.com. Its not depressing to me. I like to see all aspects of things not just the sweet chocolate :)

For years my mother has told me I need to have my first child before I am 30 to avoid complications.

What is sad to me is really women who have babies when they are really old. I mean 40s and 50s to me is not a good age to have a child. I would be so upset at my parents for having me so late in life.

Thats just my opinion. Please don't get in an uproar and curse me out and what not.

It's interesting how everyone interprets things differently. I also did not see where there is 'blame' or 'fault' on women in this particular article. I totally understand the pressures to have a baby. The hows and whys women conceive at older ages then they used to vary a lot, and as a society we need to understand it more. I think studies like these may be too general and don't take into account the healthy babies that 'older' women conceive.

Alina, thanks for posting the article. Maybe I'm more used to this type of info so I don't find it depressing. I think it can only benefit women to be informed, even if the news is harsh. I don't think its blaming women to say that delaying starting a family can cause problems. Obviously there are many reasons to wait to start a family that are reasonable and appropriate. Women get married later now than in the past. I think a husband is worth waiting for and I think most of you would agree. Also, most of the women who waited until their 30s or 40s were getting an education or starting a career, nothing is wrong with that either. I do think it is good for women who are comfortable and stable and otherwise ready to realize that there are risks to waiting. Its not the same as your grandmothers who had babies into their 40s. Those women usually already had other children when they were younger-not the same situation as someone trying for the first time. I don't mean to scare or upset anyone, I just think its good to be realistic. BTW Shamma, the fathers age has very little to do with the problems that you can have. Its sucks and its unfair but its the truth.

I agree about this study not being long enough...I wonder if the study only included women who had multiple births, who used some sort of fertility treatment, or also included women who became pregnant without any intervention, or who only had one baby. If we put all women in the age group studied, how do we know who had prenatal care and who didnt, what thier lifestyles are, ect? Multiple births (twins, ect) carry a higher risk anyway, regardless of the age of the mother.
