I don't think it's so surprising though. Better looking people generally are treated better than those who are not as good looking. Why would parents be different? We're all humans.

I'm not a mother yet but doesn't every mother think their child is beautiful. I mean that should be the attitude no? It's so mean for a parent to think their child is ugly.

I agree. I don't think it is a conscious thing, but it certainly happens. Wouldn't any parent love having an adorable child that strangers comment on how beautiful it is, rather than one that they just say, 'Oh wow, that's a baby.'

But the whole reasoning is that this is not a conscious thing--it's not like 'oh, Susie is so cute and buck tooth Sally is fugly so Susie gets a lollipop...' It's just subconsciously being more protective or loving of one. I don't have kids, but I would imagine that even though I would love them unconditionally I would know whether they are beautiful by society's standards...

I wonder if the parents doing this realize it. Do the parents think their children are ugly or is it that they are just not super attractive?

Interesting point which makes me wonder if the reason why the attractive children are taken care of better and are payed more attention by their parents is because strangers are giving them attention too.

If people fuss over your baby, you will be more aware of your baby than normal (even if you are an aware parent)

I always wonder the same. A family member was so upset once because she could not get the money together for a modeling agent for the baby, and I was like what? So I tried saying stuff like a real agent would not charge you and things like that, but she still was not catching on.

I think you would have to know...I have a cousin who just was not a good looking girl...Buck teeth, crooked nose, bad skin, the works. But her parents got her plastic surgery, braces, and the best dermatologist in her state, and she was prom queen! Totally gorgeous now. But if they hadn't acknowedged that hey, there were aspects of her appearance that could use changing, I think her life would not be so happy.

No matter how 'ugly' other people think your kids are they are beautiful to the parents. I was watching a show on TLC about kids with rare deformities and they showed one parent who decided to have their 4 year old child go through a facial reconstructive surgery in order to spare her son having to go through years of humiliation just because of the way he looked.

I think I would love who they are--the whole package--but know whether or not they are conventionally beautiful.

That is exactly my point.

The parent who decided to have surgery on the child was so upset after it happened because after it was all done, she said her son was beautiful to her just the way he was. She was very emotionally distraught.
