Bachelorette Parties: Bashing on a Budget

Planning the bachelorette bash and strapped for cash? While limos full of strippers or private yachts complete with cute male dancers may not fall within your budget, that doesn't mean you can't have an outrageous event. Check out these e conomical-but-fun party ideas, then choose a variation that's right for your to-be-wed gal.

SMUTTY SOIREES
Scene: Someone's apartment or home (even the bride's). Plaster the walls with spreads from racy magazines. Condoms make great balloons (glow-in-the-dark is best). Penis-shaped pinatas are a hoot -- to save money, make your own from newspaper, paste, and paint.

Activities: Instead of hiring a stripper (too expensive), ask a brazen, sympathetic friend -- preferably someone you've always wanted to see in shorts -- to perform an innocent dance or striptease. Place blow-up dolls in the corners. Flesh flicks and porn mags always get the girls giggling. And use that centerfold for our favorite Pin-the-Tail-on-the-Donkey variation: 'Pin the Penis on the Stud.'

Eats: Buy some edible underwear and make penis-shaped ice cubes (get the ice trays and undies at your local novelty shop), then whip up one of these naughty mixed drinks:
• Slippery Nipples ( 1/2 oz. Bailey's Irish Cream and 1/2 oz. butterscotch schnapps)
• Screaming Orgasms (1 oz. top-quality vodka, 1 1/2 oz. Bailey's Irish Cream, and 1/2 oz. Kahlua)
• Jell-O Jiggler Shots (1 large box of Jell-O, 2 unflavored gelatin packets, 1 1/4 c. boiling water, and 1 1/4 c. vodka)

Tip: How about a joint bachelor/bachelorette party? Coordinating with the best man can save money and will keep everyone honest.

SLUMBER PARTIES
There's nothing like a warm, fuzzy, sex-talk-studded slumber party to nurture the spirit of regression -- and it's very budget-friendly!

Scene: Someone's apartment or home. Cover the walls with copies of the bride's childhood pictures (especially from her awkward period).

Activities: Have a toilet paper wedding dress contest or a poetry-writing contest (including the bride's name is a must). Make up Mad Libs, play Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board, and Truth or Dare, and get nutty with X-rated Pictionary.

Extras: Pedicures and at-home facials, sharing wedding day/night stories and advice, and watching romances or romantic comedies are sleepover musts.

Eats: For overnight fare, heat-and-serve entrees are safe, or try the ultimate in budget meals: spaghetti, with a nutty, spicy twist.
• Nutty Spaghetti
(serves four; double or quadruple ingredients to accommodate your party)
8 oz. spaghetti
3 1/2 c. boiling, salted water
1 onion, finely chopped
2 Tbsp. sunflower oil
2 1/2 tsp. curry powder
3/4 c. tomato juice
3 Tbsp. crunchy peanut butter
1 Tbsp. lemon juice
Lemon slices and peanuts for garnish
Warning: Recipe does not work well with Penis Pasta

Boil spaghetti until tender and drain well. Heat oil in saucepan and fry onion until golden brown. Stir in curry powder, tomato juice, peanut butter, and lemon juice. Simmer for five minutes, then stir into spaghetti. Serve garnished with lemon twists and peanuts, with a side s alad. Total preparation time: 10 minutes.

NAUGHTY NIGHTS OUT
Scene: Cheap dives (with character, of course) are your best bet.

Props: Make the bride-to-be wear a cheap veil (attach tulle from a fabric store to a headband) and haul an inflatable man around town. Or dress her in a feather boa, garter, flashing ring, and badge or T-shirt with a slogan like, 'Tying the knot -- buy me a shot!' Ask folks to decorate her T-shirt with markers and glitter.

Games: Try the Dollar Sale, where the bachelorette sells LifeSavers or Hershey's Kisses to complete strangers for a buck each. Alternatively, take her on a scavenger hunt in which she retrieves articles from other bar patrons (like a fireman's hat, socks, or a pocket protector).

Themes/Activities: Fiesta themes -- with a little help from margaritas or sangrias -- will get even introverted souls to samba or salsa. Another surefire way to have a blast? Karaoke. And country and western venues can provid e lasting memories, unless, of course, the group is two-step inept.

Tip: Bring a camera to capture the mayhem.
