Asia's vet visit...

First let me say Asia LOVES the vet. Usually. We have to take her every 6 weeks or so to have her anal glands expressed (ick) but she never minds it. Anyway, today I took her for that, but noticed last night that one of her pads was cut and she kept licking it. So I mentioned it to the vet and she said that it was very bad! Her nerve endings and the blood supply were exposed! So, she's all bandaged up and VERY unhappy with me. She'll be fine, and it wasn't infected but it was awful to see her so unhappy! If it's like this with my dog - what's it going to be like in a few months when I have to take my baby for shots!!! Oh, and they say she's chubby! She's 87lbs and they want her down to about 80. My poor girl....

Bailey has the same problem with her anal glands...she'll lick incessantly and almost gnaw at her rear end! She would also leak!

Since being down here, we haven't had a problem....we make sure she gets lots of water and we walk her all over the place so she 'marks' which I think has something to do with it.

I also read yesterday that if your dog is excessively vomiting and it's yellowish, it's due to the glands being all backed up.

The vet said it's very common. She's had it since she's about 6 mos old, so she's used to it. I just know when she needs to go because she sits funny and she kinda stinks a little after she goes to the bathroom. Now it's just her paw...she's so unhappy!

Awww, poor little Asia's paw! She'll be okay and won't even remember it once everything's healed I'm sure!

can I ask you girls about the anal gland thing? Is that with females only, or can males have it too? I remembered reading about this briefly in Rottweilers for Dummies before we brought Golem home, but I was never too clear on what that whole thing was about... Thanks!

Males can have it too - it's just that the 'juices' get trapped in the glands when normally they would just excret (sp??) with the rest.... Asia's symptoms as a puppy were that she would constantly lick down there. I thought it was the front, but it turns out it was the back. She had quite a few UTI's as a puppy until we figured out that she was licking back to front causing them. So, now as soon as we see her licking we take her to the vet. Some dogs scoot on their butts when it's irritating them (as if they had worms) and some, like Asia, just sit gingerly or figet when they sit.

I thought it was pretty gross, but it's really quite common. HTH
