Assisted Living Facilities

Assisted Living Facilities

We are in the process of helping DH's grandfather make a decision about moving into an assisted living facility. We have some questions.

Does insurance cover any of the treatment? How much does it cost? Do you buy an apartment or rent? Inquiring minds want to know.

Thanks.

Re: Assisted Living Facilities

They are very expensive, some of them accpet medicaid as a form of partial payment, but they can cons about $2000 per month some are more than others. It is important to find a faility that will provide exactly what he needs, for example, not all facilities have PT, OT, etc, then you would have to contract to have this done privately through insurance. I know many of the facilities, espeicallu Atria in Nprthport, it is really nice. You can buy an apartment-like unit, or there are dorm-like settings.

Insurance won't cover assisted living facilities. It will cover health related facilities. Two different things.

That's nothing compared to nursing homes...when I was in my elder law clinic I had clients in facilities that cost $15k- $20k per MONTH. That's one of the many reasons why proper estate planning is crucial.

Anyway, to find out information (or at least the best place to get information) on Assisted Living Facilities, contact your local Ombusman. Here's a link to the site:

I dealt with them often to help my clients, but for nursing home problems. I'm sure that if they do not handle Assisted Living information, they should at least be able to tell you who to call/ where to look. Hope that helps...

IMO, even proper estate planning won't cover $20K a month unless you're a millionaire or only plan on staying there for a few months. That's $240K a YEAR! that's insane! how can seniors possibly afford this? unless they were millionaires!

Proper estate planning doesn't 'pay for' $20k/ month, rather it arranges your estate in such a way that Medicaid will pay. Whether it's the morally correct thing to do or not is not a debate I'm going to have here anytime soon...the fact remains that that is how the majority of Americans deal with the problem of extraordinarily high fees of these type of places without losing everything that they ever worked for in a matter of months.

Yep, I used to work with estate planning clients and there is life insurance in place to take care of this and long term care insurance. The other choice is getting your assets out of your name in time so that by the time you need the gov'ts help, you are considered to be broke only your family is the one that has all of your money in their names. That's the moral issue. It stinks, but that's how people pass on their wealth.

My grandmother is in one of these facilities and it's $4K or so a month, and it's in PA. We're forunate that my uncle is loaded and that he also invtested my grandmother's money wisely so it's all taken care of. Good Luck. it's not an easy decision, but I see the care my grandmother gets, and it's really excellent care and we don't have to worry about her health and safety

Yikes at these prices. This is darn scary to really think about.

Re: Assisted Living Facilities

are they really taken care of that well? the bristal near me i know has programs to help them stay involved, but they are not totally inolved. In an example we have a patient who comes to our office and one day she was late so i called up and asked if she had left, they said they didn't know, the only thing they knew is that she waited for a taxi and they never showed. So basically noone knows where she is. Ten minutes later after half an hour has passed she comes in all huffing and puffing because she walked down a major street all by herself with a walker and actually got lost because she missed the block and had to turn around. She got tired of waiting for the taxi and didn't want to be late for her appointment. Basically the Bristal has no concern for any of their patients and their whereabouts in my office and I's opinion.

Re: Assisted Living Facilities

DH Grandmother was at the Bristal in East Meadow for awhile and is now at a nursing home. Her estate payed for the Bristal which was $4,000 a month. Now she is in a nursing home paid for Medicare (her estate has been depleted) and that is $9,000 a month.

As for the Bristal i think it was great. It keeps them active and there are a lot of activities to do. They have socials, card games, dinners.....she really like it there...now i go tot he nursing home and get upset because of the conditions and how really sick those people are.

Also, we had been looking into assisted living for my Grandmother who passed away...there are some places that will take a large fee up front (like $150,000) and then you only pay them $900 a month for the rest of the elderly persons life. I don't think those are worth it.
