asthma question...

I need help with my son...He has asthma and although his does not act up every day, it has been becoming more frequent.

He has a nebulizer and he also takes Claritin every morning and Singulair every night. He has been coughing so bad at night that he throws up constantly

For those of you that have asthma or had it when you were younger, what gives you the most relief?

We have a Dr's appt at 2 today, but I feel so bad watching him suffer and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: asthma question...

My FH has asthma...as do his 4 sisters (his other 2 brothers don't) and his dad.

FH has been using the purple disc - forget the proper name - and it has helped him tremendously. Don't know if it's available for younger children. Also, he takes my Allegra-D and has found it works better for him than Claritin did. Again, don't know if that's available for younger children.

I believe hot showers helped as a child...I think coffee helps sometimes now.

I'm so sorry your son is going through this...I hope the Dr can be more helpful.

Re: asthma question...

I've had asthma since I was about 5 years old. I notice that in the winter months it acts up more. I know dry air is supposed to be great for asthma, but I actually found using a humidifyer in my bedroom has helped.

Have you found out what triggers his attacks? What is he allergic to?

Re: asthma question...

The heat is a KILLER... frank turns the heat up at night and i need to open a window so i get fresh air so the asthma doesnt act up.. even heat from the car if blowing right at me will make it act up.. Advair is the purple disc and is getting very popular.. i suggest asking the doctor for this. I would switch from clariton.. sometimes when taking allergy pills we get used to them after a while and then they dont work as effectivly.. I take allegra, and also zyrtec works great too..

Get a humidifier. that will help. I love the facial sauna...I also have the nebulizer. Hugs to your son...

Re: asthma question...

The heat is awful this time of year, but Stacy, I would go to an allergist and find out what he's allergic to because once I did that, I was able to control my asthma so much better. Also, it turned out my doctor was OVER medicating me, and once I started a lower does of meds, my attacks would go away quickly. See, I know myself and if my allergies are bothering me, I know my asthma is right behind them. I'm EXTREMELY allergic to dust mites, so sleeping with a pillow cover has helped a lot, too. And don't get mad about this, but you might want to have him tested for a dog allergy I know your doggy is so cute, but a lot of times, pet allergies contribute to asthma attacks

My friedns borther has really bad asthma, and he loves the purple disk thing, he said it has beena life saver. DO you bring him to a DR just for Asthma?? Regualr Dr's sometimes don't do the trick. I went to one and he did wonders for me.

Re: asthma question...

He's already gone to an allergist, and had the scratch tests done...he's allergic to ALOT. Mold, dust, pollen, trees, cats, etc....

Rach...no dog allergies. He's already been checked

awww..poor little guy---i'm sorry--that is so hard to have to watch

doese take the claritin D? The decongestant might help. i know steam helps me. And when I'm desperate I take Albeturol the inhaler, but that makes me so jumpy, i hate taking it--

i hope the dr can help--what about allergy shots?

Re: asthma question...

thanks ladies...just got back from the Dr.

His blood oxygen level was low so they gave him a treatment in the office, and he needs breathing treatments every 4 hours for the next 3 days, and then every 6 hours until he goes for a re-check in a week.

I asked about the inhaler, but the Dr. does not want him to become dependent on that.

Shoot me, please

Make sure when he's out in the cold that he covers his mouth w. a scarf. The cold air is killer on the lungs!!
