I need some help, my fiancee and I are going to look at an apt in Astoria tomorrow on 41st street (near Steinway). Anyone know anything about that area? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Re: Astoria help!
I lived in Astoria for quite a while and FH's family still lives there. Out of curiosity, do you have a specific reason for looking in Astoria? Because you can get nicer, bigger and cheaper apts. in a different neighborhood (ex. Bayside, Whitestone, Auburndale, Flushing). IMO Astoria is not as nice as it used to be and the rents have gotten ridiculous also. The apt. is on 41st St. and what Ave.?

Re: Astoria help!
What avenue? When you reach steinway street the avenue matters. Its a bit far from the train station also (of course depending on the avenue)..
I live in Astoria, and love it- it is so so convenient. (I wish my job was in the city so I could continue living in Astoria, but since I work out on LI (in Hauppauge) it makes a lot more sense to move closer to the Queens/Naussau border).
It is very easy to find a great apartment near a train station and supermarkets are within walking distance. And there are actually a lot of newly rented apartments with decent rents if you look around. Astoria has A LOT of renovated empty apartments for rent so definitely look around before you settle on one.
Steinway Street is the major shopping area in Astoria. Its nice from 30th avenue up till broadway. Its changed a lot but those stores are quite convenient.

A very good friend of mine lives on 42nd St. by Broadway. The neighborhood is decent. Steinway has great shopping.

Re: Astoria help!
I lived in Astoria for about 2.5 years or so and loved it. I lived close to Steinway - off of Broadway. I really loved the area! It is so close to NYC and has lots in walking distance. The rents were pretty high when I moved there - esp since 9-11 when a lot of people made the move out of NYC and were looking for close surberbs in decent neighborhoods...but so worth it to me. If you have any questions feel free to FM and I can give you my honest opinion.

Re: Astoria help!
I used to live at 30th Avenue and Cresent Just a few blocks from the Train Station. Just past that little park they have with the statue.
All I can say is Thank GOD I moved!!!
I loved the deli's and the small stores and all the bakeries and resturants and shopping but nothing was worth living there again.
I could be jaded because it was my first apt in NYC and it was so cramped compared to what I was used to. I hated the walk to the train station even though it was only a few blocks I NEVER felt 100% safe walking that far late at night. All those stairs!! Plus there's the constant sirens. And all I can say about the people is 'multicultural'. Being new to NY I had NEVER seen someone blow their nose into a street before. Nor have I have I seen it since I left Astoria.
I moved to Kew Gardens Queens. Closer to the Nassau border. On the E line/Fl line and really easy to get to the office in the City. Much roomier apt, much more lay back and quiet neighborhood. Just a ride from Forest Hills with all the shopping on Austin St.
I miss NOTHING about Astoria. But that doesnt mean others may not love the place. It just wasn't for me.
