Re: Astoria Help!!!!!
Athens cafe on a Sunday afternoon for coffee & desert!
More in the Ditmars area, right? There are some fun bars on Broadway and a new late night 'tapas' style place on Ditmars and 33rd I think? I forgot what it's called. There's also an excellent Tapas place called El Boqueron (It's on 31st street- 34th or 35th ave- I forget)...
On 30th ave there are a few good Thai places- i like Thai Angel- 30th ave & 35th street.
There is a bar on Steinway, a little North of 30th ave called NickelodeINN which has fun trivia games, etc- also- good sandwhiches.
Look up Telly's Taverna- I love that restaurant.
There is also a cozy neighborhood bar on the same area as the new UA movie theater.. but I forgot which avenue it is.
Also- around Kaufman Astoria there are two cool bars- but I forget what they are called.

Re: Astoria Help!!!!!
I lived on 35th and Broadway so I was very close to you. I miss my veggie and fish markets on Broadway...
I agree with a lot of the above!
Thai Angel - yummy thai and they also deliver on 30th Ave
Tierras Columbianos (sp?) - Columbian diner like place...lots of good food at a low price. Love the breaded steak and they have yummy rice and beans on the side - DH and I must make a trip to Astoria at least 3 times a year for this...Bdwy and 33th?
Michaels and Sanfords diners are both pretty good.
Stamantis and Demetrios both on Broadway between 31 st and 34th are both good Greek. Also that big place on 30th ave and maybe 35th has good Greek.
The tapas that someone mentioned above on 31st is really good. Miss that one too.
Also I liked Opus - it opened not long before I moved out but I went twice for drinks and tapas.
I use to go for Mexican on the corner on Northern and Steinway - it is a big place but had ok Mexican.
For Japanese - well sushi and rolls - we would go to the place on Broadway and like 36/37th. It is the only one over there.
Brooklyn Bagel on Bdwy and 35/35th for bagels and sandwiches. Also the Italian deli right by there is really good for cold cuts, sandwiches and Italian pastas.
I like Kolonaki better than Omonia for desserts.
Don't know too many bars - I use to go out in the city for happy hour and on weekends. Although there was a bar on 35th and Bdwy that I bought wings for a super bowl party and they were very good.
Right off Steinway and up maybe 30th or the next avenue - great place for eyebrow threading. Miss them too. $5
I liked Cosmos Nail on 38th - (the street right before Steinway) right off of Broadway for manicures and pedicures when Iwould get them. They are very nice to the regular customers esp. I didn't go to often but they always remembered me and they did my mani/pedi for my wedding and went nuts for me to bring in wedding pictures.
If you get a menu for a place called Tasty - they have good sandwiches and salads to order in. I have no clue where it was located and what the place looked like but DH and I refused to see it in person because we were afraid if it didn't look nice we wouldn't order from it anymore and the California Cobb Salad was a staple for us
Can you tell I miss astoria....I haven't found enough variety in food in Bellmore...

Re: Astoria Help!!!!!
Born and raised Astoria girl here!
The Columbian rest. on Broadway and 33rd street is amazing!
Neptune diner is amazing on astoria blvd and 32st street. Belaire and Sanfords is also good and right in the area.
One of my staples is Cronin and Phelans on broadway and steinway..good food and cute bar. Mary mcguires is also good right next door.
If you order from Tasty, dont go in! As someone else said...the food is great but you dont wanna see where it comes from! LOL
My favorite bar is Gibneys on Broadway and 32nd street. Awesome atmosphere and a good time. Nickolodeans on steinway isnt there anymore as someone else had mentioned. I think its a Japanese rest. now.
Lots of greek places that are amazing more in the Ditmars area. Kolonaki is amazing for desserts and the food at Zodiac is to die for..amazing salads. Uncle Georges is also amazing but they dont take credit cards so go prepared.
There is also a Pizzeria Uno on I think 35th avenue right before Steinway street. Across from the movie theater. There is also a King China Buffet closer to Ditmars which is amazing!
Are you on 41st avenue did you say?

Re: Astoria Help!!!!!
OOhhh your on 41st street between broadway and 31st avenue??
OK, I know exactly where now.
There are tons of places to shop. For food when we want a big store we go to Pathmark on Northern not too far from you or to Stop and shop right off of Northern. There is also a home depot right over there if you need it.
Smaller stores near you I think are Key food and associated. It really is a diverese area with many things to do and places to go.

Re: Astoria Help!!!!!
Cavo is a lounge/bar/restaurant - especially nice in the summer because they have an outdoor area. i think it's on 42nd street and 31st ave. no cover charge. food is good. they play greek music half the night. good sangria here too.
Telly's Taverna - great greek food (i dont like uncle george's as much... it used to be less greasy back in the day)
Gibney's - nice local irish pub with a young crowd (20's and 30's)
Dino's pizzeria on Broadway and 29th street - yummyyyyy! it's as good as brooklyn pizza
athen's cafe - since the smoking ban, it's been relatively dead - but i'm sure things will pick up when the weather gets better. i dont eat it cause i hate feta, but people claim they have great tiropita.
Captain's- good for greek seafood.
there is also a bar next to gibney's (on broadway between 32nd and 33 street). They keep changing owners. I dont go there, but they alwys seem to have some kind of live music like jazz going on.
dont know the name, but there is a nice italian restaurant on 31st and ditmars right next to pizza palace. homemade pasta.
i also pick kolonaki over omonia... had a couple of bad experiences at omonia with waterbugs it was many years ago, but i am still traumatized.
ohhh, and the absolute best bakery for tarts, cookies, and the pies (especially rasberry tart, apple crisp, pecan pie, pumpkin pie) - i forget the name, but you must check it out! it's on ditmars boulevard between 32nd and 33rd (or if there is no 32nd street, then it's between 33rd and 34th). highly recommended. it's on the block that linda and gina's hair salon is on.
