At what age where you able to walk home from school?
I walked home from school since I was in kindergarten with friends of course. And I was in a small town. My FMIL won't let her 12 yr old daughter walk home 5 blocks and I am just wondering if anyone else was like this?

My boss won't allow her 12 year old daughter to ever be home by herself. I have always thought this was odd because by the age of about 8 my parents were leaving me alone (although I had an older sister but she was 11). To me 5 blocks is not that big of a deal unless one of the blocks is a major road.

I think alot of it really depends on the child and their maturity. I dont know at what age I'll let my kids walk home by themselves but I'm certainly not going to rush it.

It depends. I was allowed t wlak home sometimes when i was in jr high (before that I lived too far., took schoolbus). But we had to cross woodhaven boulevard and avoid gangs to get home, so....

I walked to/from school in third grade (7 yo?) by myself or with kids my own age. The school bus wouldn't take us after 2nd and then 4th grade was Catholic school.

The first time I remember walking home by myself was in 3rd grade. I think I was 8???? We lived 1 block away, but I always took the long way home to walk with my friend, which was ok with my mom.

I'd say 2nd grade ... sometimes with my older brother or a kid who lived in our building ... it was a hike too (well, with such little legs ) - eight city blocks.

This is so funny. My sisters and I were just talking about this because life has changed so much over the past couple of decades. When we were little, we walked to and from school every day (uphill in the snow, barefoot... ) and now, with their children, we literally wait across the street from their house to meet them at the bus stop. The bus drivers aren't even allowed to drop kids off at stops unless there's someone there that they KNOW! It's crazy, and sad. Doesn't mean our parents were bad, it just means society has gotten worse.

My niece is ten and walking home from school is out of the question. Not in this day and age.
I will not even allow my kids to wait at the bus stop without me.
