Not to scare you, but be careful with atkins. You can develop kidney stones I believe from having too much protein. I don't know how much they have altered the diet since I last knew people who did it.. but just be careful!

not to burst your bubble, but i got REALLY sick from this diet... i did lose a TON of weight really quickly, but I was also in the hospital because my kidneys started to shut down. I have since gained all of the weight back and then some....

although weight watchers is slowly but surely (and healthily) helping me take it all off again.

I do atkins but not totally....

I have a lot of whole grains and high fiber foods in place of carbs. And, of course I fill up on veggies, fruits and lean meats and seafood.

I don't want to burst your bubble and motivation, but I need to tell you, PLEASE don't do it. Take this from someone who has a master's in health and nutrition.

We are finding that the average American actually consumes too much protein and as a result have higher rates of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes than people in low-socioeconomic status. This was puzzling, and they realized it is because people in wealthier homes tend to consume more animal protein. Atkin's is the absolute worst thing and will send you sprinting toward chronic diseases later in life. The big difference is animal protein. People who get their protein from plants do not have these problems.

The ideal diet is actually mostly carbs. Read 'The China Study', this explains it all better than I can.

It doesn't have to be complicated. Eat TONS of veggies, fruits, and whole foods, like whole grains, nuts, and beans. Cut back on animal-based foods like milk (try light soy), meat (especially beef), and cheese. Fish is ok in moderation. Think 'plant-based' and that is really all you have to do, and get some exercise of course.

People in China actually consume an average of 500 calories per day MORE than Americans at about 2700 calories per day, yet nobody is overweight or obese. The difference is that they consume mostly plant-based foods and eat very little animal foods.

ITA. i tried atkins briefly a few years ago, i got so sick. felt SO bad. it's a loophole in the body's natural metabolism, but that doesn't mean you should do it. it's not for long term and it's really bad. sorry, jmho! be careful!!

Re: atkins diet

hmmm...I go against everything everyone says...I've been doing atkins for about 5 years now...I was stricter in the past...lost 70 pounds and for the most part have kept it off. I think I gained back about 15 pounds. I love it....but maybe that's just me. If you really want to do it read the Atkins book and check out lowcarbfriends.com they have awesome recipes and many knowledgeable people on a chat board. FM me with any questions.

Yea low carb is unhealthy so be careful. If you just cut out eating ALOT of carbs it may be okay but to cut them out totally it messes up your organs.

Ditto - aktins is not a healthy diet choice. I was part of a study in college about it. (I was collecting the data not following the diet) but it was not good for those people!

Re: atkins diet

you lose weight sure, but in my opinion, it's not a diet that's meant for long term use AND the risks FAR outweigh the potential for limited weight loss.

eta: also, with this type of diet, you aren't really changing your metabolism, you just force your body to tap into your stored sugars/fats, etc. but your body will not react well when you go off the diet - you'll most likely gain weight back too. sorry, SO not a fan of this one!
