We are going to an afternoon wedding and Dale is wearing a suit but I figured he could wear a nice shirt with the collar open and no tie. My mom looked at me strange. But I figured it was an afternoon wedding. What is your opnion?

Re: Attire for afternoon wedding..... Help
I don't think the time of the day is the only thing you should consider when thinking about attire. You also have to think about the formality of the wedding (the invitation should give a clue to that) and the location. I am having an afternoon wedding and although I did not specify attire, I do not think a nice shirt with an open collar and no tie is appropriate for our wedding. I've been to several afternoon weddings and most of the men still wore suits.

I agree it depends on where it is and the formality of the event...

I think it depends on the formality. In my opion while day weddings are not black tie events we have always dressed up - FI in a suit and me in a cocktail dress or long gown. It really depends on how formal it is.

I think a jacket and tie is required for a day wedding, even it's a sports coat not a suit.

I'd say at least the tie if not the jacket. Don't forget - it's still someone's wedding. I'd be pretty upset if someone showed up like that regardless of what time of day or day of the week the wedding was.

Re: Attire for afternoon wedding..... Help
I am having an afternoon wedding at Villa, I would be upset if people showed up in Dockers and Polo shirts.
Button up, with sport jacket and dress pants, definetely
Or be safe and go with a suit, but don't wear a tie..one of those collarless shirts would look sharp..

Unless it's a casual wedding I would say the men are expected to wear suits.

I agree. However, I went to an outdoor day wedding at a winery & they specified gardne party attire (the groom wore a suit, not a tux) so msot men didn't wear ties.
We went to a Sunday 11 am wedding & all the guys wore suits- some of my girlfriends dresed down a little though. I was kinda of surprised.

I agree with everyone else. I think as a woman you can pull of a short tea length dress, but the men should still be in suits. I hope they were suits to my wedding

I think a suit with no tie is fine. Most of our guy friends, FH incldued, take their ties off after an hour or so anyway.

My wedding is a formal Saturday night affair, and it wouldn't bother me of guys took off their ties. According to FH and his frends, they're really uncomfortable and I wouldn't want people to be uncomfortable.

I was thinking of the young Hollywood look. Still in a dress shirt with a suit. Not a polo type or a shirt he would wear at a barbecue.

I know, FH tells me he'd rather leave his jacket on & take off his tie, no matter how many times I tell him ties are sexy
I've just never seen that done. my friend was arrested after a weding last yar & think he even had his tie on at the police station in the middle of the night.
