Attn: All Graphic Designers!!!! and anyone else who loves photoshop, quark and weddings!

I'm not sure where I should be posting this question.....I'm a Graphic Designer, I'm getting a digital wedding album and I'm not sure if I'm over reacting to something or not...The graphic artist hired by my photographer to create our wedding album scanned the 4x6 proof not the negatives(our album will be 9x9)...I'm I over reacting to this...they are also telling me that they will color correct and touch up the dust after all the effects are done and no other photos need to be moved around...also the GA told me she will be sending jpegs to the printer....

All these thing to me are a no-no, I hired a professional to create my album, to be purely focused on my album and thats not what I'm getting

- Really, really sad about my album

i would say all those things are NO_NO! I would def say something and insisted things are done right!

i do feel the same way you do about these issues! My photographer turned out to be a total idiot. There are so many things that he does that are a big no-no in a professional world. One print came out too red and I had to explain to him that it was most likely printed off the RGB file instead of CMYK. He had no idea what that was. Of course it turned out exactly that and they fixed it. But can you believe it???? Photographer doesn't know the difference between those things! I was floored!

When I saw the retouching job they did on some picture I almost fell off the chair! I would be fired if i ever turned something like that in! I am still making him redo some things!

He is majorly pissed off with me. He thought I am one of the many cluesless brides who will love any half -a s sed job he will stick under her nose! But i am NOT letting him to it to me! Which is why 1.5 years after the wedding I still don't have my album! but I would ratehr wait then accept the crap that he wants me to settle on!

wooh, that felt good! finally someone who can feel my pain!

DH says they probably shouldn't be sending JPEGs, they should but using GIFs. They can scan the 4x6 at a high enough resolution to blow them up but scanning a negative would be better (you had film not digital images taken?). Also, then they would have to do a lot less work to touch up the dust and colors. It will be a lot more work and require more skill to touch up the scans. Good luck with your album!

I'm no GA, but I do know the basics and will be taking care of my own album for the reasons you listed...

Can you design the layout yourself and submit it for printing? This is what I plan to do with my photographer...

ETA: Although I totally like my photographer, when he told me he would charge $10 a scan for my negs I told him to 'bite me' - for that amount I will buy my own neg scanner and do it myself! I actually think I may be able to get away with the setup I currently have, but we'll see...

SonicStef did an fantastic job with her album, you may want to ask her for some advice, I don't know if she currently offers this type of service though...

OK, I am slightly confused here, could you clarify a few questions I have?

Are you getting ONLY a digital album?
Are you getting a regular print and bound album?

The person who scanned your 4x6 proofs is making your digital album or is he/she doing a regular printed album with scans??????

What album will be 9x9? The printed album or the digital album?

If the person making your digital album is scanning in the pictures why would they be sending any king of files to the printer?????

I am sooooo confused!

What is going on? I am sorry I have so many questions. I am just trying to understand the logic of this situation, being a graphic designer myself!

Thanks
Jen

I think that's BS. I would never stand for that. If they're not using a high quality scanner ad scanning the NEGS, not the prints, then I wouldn't pay a dime for it.

Hi Jen, I hope this helps
I think you might be thinking a digital album is only on the computer or a CD.

I'm getting the SoHo album, its a digital album meaning the photos are placed into photoshop or a program like that and giving crazy effects and filters. But when its finished it goes to a printer to be printed into a coffee table style book.

I hope this helps

I tend to agree.....I do not have alot of experience, but scanning a print is a huge no-no....and correcting dust???? no offense, but at such a large scale of correction, won't that compromise the colour integrity of the photo?????

I would say something...just like anything else for your wedding you are paying top dollar and should get service and practice that relfects it

Okay, now I definately understand much better!

YEAH! That is definately BS! They should be scanning the negatives, or they should have used a digital camera! NO SCANNING OF PROOFS!

I definately wouldn't stand for that!
UGH! This person is making me so angry!

You could have done this yourself, since you are a graphic designer, and wouldn't have had to pay them all that money! You thought you were going to get top quality!

If I were you I would defiately put up a HUGE stink about this! It is BS and they are trying to take advantage of you!t
