Attn: Teachers...need advice

Ok....so I have a demo lesson in a catholic school on Thursday. However, i'm not prepared to accept the job if offered. A friend of mine demoed in the same school today and was offered the job an hour after her lesson!

My question is.....I obviously can't turn down the job if offered, but does that mean I have to stop looking in the public schools? What if I take the catholic school job and then get offered a probationary job in a public school. What should I do? Is it really bad to accept the catholic school and then turn around a month later and say that I will now be declining bc I got offered a job in a public school?

Help!

in this economy, i would take it

i graduated in may at the top of my class, and went until december with subbing and leaves, before i got a job at a private school, and now im excised ..

you could always go back and tell them you have a better opportunity, but i would take what you can get

i would say definatly take it. If another opportunity comes up thats all you need to tell tham. Another opportunity came up and i wont be able to keep the position. They will have no problem filling the position you decided you did not want to take.

I would take the job

As a teacher in a NYC Public School I know for a fact that this year is going to be bad.
My union rep said if the principal tells you to be the janitor next year for a few months do it....so if you are looking for a NYC public school job they will be a dime a dozen
Not sure about Long Island public schools

If offered, I would take it. You could look for a public school next year. You just cant risk it right now. It's hard to find a job. Good luck!!!!!

I would take it..

considering the major cuts that are happening this year and next in the NYS school budget..
I mean my mother works at a public school

and after 15 yrs even her job is not safe
alot of teachers are getting pink slips this year coming.

I would def take it. I teach autistic kids out in nassau and im in a lot of different school districts and its pretty bad out there. I have been trying to get into a public school but its so hard they arent expecting it to get better till at least 2011-2012 year.

You don't have to stop looking. Some public school districts will make you sign something, withdrawing your name from the running in other districts. Is the school a Diocesan school? If it is, the pay isn't as bad as you think. Take it and build up your résumé…lot’s of teachers are being let go this year. It is always better to keep teaching rather than work outside of education.

No I agree....I will take it as a back up. It is a Diocesan school that is located 45 minutes from my house. And the pay is not good. After gas, rent, and car bills, I really wont save anything at all.

Honestly...i'm just worried about the paycheck. My FH doesnt currently have a job (elementary teacher)....so its not like i have his money to fall back on. He is actually going back to school this summer to start the nursing program. Its gonna be really tight as it is for a few years....and me working in a catholic school is gonna make it really hard.
