Austin, TX anyone?

My DH and I are considering a possible move in the next year and Austin, TX keeps coming up as one of those places that has good jobs, affordable housing, nice weather etc...we've never been there and I was wondering if anyone has any insight or opinions??? We have a house on LI right now but the commute, the winter, the traffic etc, are really beginning to get to me!!!

Do yourself a favor and move to Austin NOW! It is one of my favorite cities in the US, for all the reasons you mentioned - plus it is beautiful, there is tons to do (both culturally and recreationally), and the people are nice. I used to live in Houston and would travel to Austin once a month, so feel free to ask questions. I am pretty familiar the city. I just love it there!

AH! That is so good to hear! We have heard there are lots of music venues, museums, outdoor recreation etc - the only thing keeping us in NY is our family - but as sad as it is, I think it would be better for us esp since we want to start our own family soon.

One question I do have - I heard it gets unbearably hot in the summers and I'm wondering if I'll feel lost without an ocean nearby. How big is the Lake there?

Thanks so much for your help - I really appreciate it!

Summers can be pretty rough, but I don't know if I would say unbearable. (Houston, on the other hand, is totally unbearable in the summer....) It gets hot (90+) but the humidity is not too high.

Austin and the surrounding areas are dotted with lakes - Lake Travis is really big, but there are some other ones of good size. Town Lake is one of my favorites, just because it's right in the middle of downtown, so it's kind of a neat juxtaposition. (Technically it's not a lake, but a portion of the Colorado River.) Most of my friends own boats and practically spend the entire summer on waterskis.

The Gulf of Mexico isn't too far - maybe a 5 hour drive? South Padre and Corpus Christi have especially nice beaches.
