I've been to Australia and it's amazing. I would highly recommend staying in Sydney near Circular Quay or The Rocks (2 popular areas). You should definitely fly from Sydney up to Cairns where the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforst are. It's beautiful there.
Quantas is selling the Aussie Air Pass right now which means that you can fly from here to Sydney and then get 3 domestic flights within Australia. So you could go to Sydney, fly to Cairns, fly to another city (I would recommend either Western Australia or Ayers Rock), then back to Sydney and then home.
I see that you're also interested in NZ though. I would then do 3 nights in Sydney, 5 in Cairns and 5 in NZ if you were able to do 2 full weeks for your HM.
