April 2nd is Autism Awareness Day. Please take a moment to educate yourself about this condition that now affects 1 out of every 150 children. That number also includes my ALMOST seven year old nephew Carlton, so if you get a moment today please say a prayer for him and all the other children who struggle with this every single day!!!
My cousin just got her Doctorate a few years ago. She specializes in children with Autism. When she was in school working on her degrees she would have sessions at the kids houses and work with them. Every summer when i'd come back to NY I'd go with her and I remember falling in love with one of the kids Charlie....he was so adorable and really so smart! It's such a shame this has to happen.

im glad too - i just wanted to say that the parents of children with autism are some of the most amazing parents and amazing people i have ever met, so strong, so loving, so patient, so dedicated - really amazing parents....i worked in the office answering phones - lots of parents looking for help, looking for schools, recreation programs, social skills programs, aba, looking for support groups, parent advocates, looking for other kids and parents like themselves...i did some admin work as well and even had the opportunity to assist during social skill classes and during summer camp - it was SO MUCH FUN! i met amazing children, amazing parents and i was exposed to a whole other world - im really sad now - i miss that job

Re: Autism Awareness Day
I work in a law office and we actually hired a young man with Autism, through this Organization called WOWY (i forgot what it stands for). He does filing, shredding and scanning type of work. He makes his own money and it really allows him to be a little independent and stay connected to the outside world.
It's a great organization, they train autistic people and find jobs for them. they also let them design artwork and put it on greeting cards or postcards and sell them, all for the benefit of the organization.

What a great post ! My sister is mildly autistic and mildly neurologically impared ( mildly retarted ) , and posting about awareness really educates others who are not familiar with these conditions .
My sister is able to work , lives semi-independently thanks to organizations like AHRC and ACLD ( adult children with learning disabilities ) . I thank g-d for these organizations who have helped Hayley ( my beautiful , loving wonderful sister) and my family .

No Problem ! I think it is SO important to discuss issues like this . I am happy that society has evolved enough that there is not as much shame families felt as they used to , due to people lack of knowlege or general disregard for handicapped ( mental or otherwise) people in society today.
to you for bringing awareness to the boars

Thank you for posting this! My 2 year old godson is also included in these drastic numbers and it's great when we can help raise awareness and educate others on the condition.
Bump for Tilde who wants to keep this on the first page --

Re: Autism Awareness Day
Wow - great thread. I have two kids in my class who are autistic - one with aspergers, and another with mild autism. We also think a third child is on the spectrum, but we're unsure as he's never been tested.
Working with these children brings me so much joy. They have wonderful supportive families, and th children are just great kids. In both of the diagnosed cases, but kids developed autism (or signs of it) around 15 months old.
I think it's so important to bring awareness out to the general public. Thanks Tilde!

Re: Autism Awareness Day
I am a teacher for Children with Autism in Bayside, Queens. It is a disability that will be with these children for the rest of their lives. It ranges in severity from child to child and manifests differently in everyone. This makes it so much harder to treat or teach. Everyone, please click those links and learn some more about autism.
Thank you for posting Tilde!

Re: Autism Awareness Day
i work with children with severe autism. the one thing that i stress to anyone that i talk about this to is that FIRST they are children/people/adults. secondary to that they have Autism. so many times people focus on the bad - 'oh isn't is sad?' 'isn't it heartbreaking?' and forget to realize that these kids all have their own personalities, strengths, and things to struggle with that have nothing to do with their disability. heck, i have the biggest mix of divas, brown-nosers, mama's boys, bosses, and every other name under the sun in my class (you wouldn't believe what we have in the school). i love it! when given the right supports these kids (and really anyone with disabilities) can gain and move ahead so much. (i have a friend who i have this argument with all the time and i will not even tell you how much it frustrates me).
i always enjoyed this and it seemed like a good time to post it here. =0)

Re: Autism Awareness Day
Matilde, as I was lounging, trying to feel better today, I watched MSNBC: They showed a Mother from India, with her adult autistic Son, and told how she helped him, and is now helping American children, with autism. It broke my heart to see these children, and their struggles.I sat and cried, and prayed for these precious children. Prayers for your dear nephew. Much Love!! Mary MOB
