Auto Insurance question? Please help<3

HI girls
My DH and I just bought a car, and I have to add him to my policy

Did anyone else have to do this, if so, did it go up a WAYYY lot?

Sorry I can't help with your specific situation... I don't think it's that much more to add a vehicle to your policy, but I'm not sure.

I finally canceled my NY policy (they require proof that my previous license plates were destroyed before they'll let you) but DH had added me to his NC policy even before that.

I used to pay about $650 every 6 months for my own insurance in NY (I lived in Brooklyn).

Now, we pay $300 for BOTH OF US in NC. That's freakin insane.

Both policies were with Geico.

Like just listing him as a driver? Or him and his car as a second car on your policy?

In NY, the auto insurance attaches to the vehicle, not the person. Adding additional 'authorized drivers' is a good idea, but isn't necessary since the car itself is covered (ie: if there's an accident, the no-fault policy will kick in no matter who is driving*). There should not be a charge to simply add a person to the authorized drivers list.

When I used to go on week-long vacations, I'd let a friend borrow my car for the week in exchange for rides to the airport. I'd call Geico just to let them know that if anything came up, she was an authorized driver so there wasn't any confusion. It was always free.

ETA: *I do not believe this is true if the vehicle is stolen, though, and being driven by an illegal driver. That opens a different can of worms and gdwilling will never happen to any of us.
