Average size of a wedding band?

My fiance and I are finding out info on bands, and most have 9 members and they will not go smaller. This sounds HUGE! We wanted like 5-6 but maybe we are not being reasonable? Is that still possible.. to get a very god band with that many members? I just cant picture NINE band members set up in the corner of our reception room..

I'm not really sure, but ours had 8 band members.

Our wedding band (Dexter Lake Club Band) actually has only 6 members but its not a traditional wedding band, more of a rock/cover band.

i think that a big band is not necessary if 6 members play really well together!

Do the bands give a breakdown of what the members do? I know there are sometimes a few singers a) for different style songs and b) because it's really hard to sing for 4-5 hours by yourself. Maybe that's part of the reason there are so many? And if you have your basic drums, keys, guitar bass set up, that's maybe 7 people right there if here are 3 singers... add a sax and a horn and you have 9... I guess it adds up quickly.
I think it's the nature of the beast for a band that is specific for playing weddings.
