Okay, my sister (who is a BM) just had a baby who will be 6 months old by the time of the wedding. Anyway, she said she wants him at the ceremony and the reception. I don't know if its a good idea- I just didn't imagine a crying baby at the wedding, but it is my nephew. Am I being mean? What would you do? I didn't say no outright but I just don't know anymore...

Absolutely NOT! That is way too young to have at a wedding. I'm with diva - I'm surprised she even put you in the position of asking you.

I would say at the ceremony is one thing, and if he starts to cry someone will have to take him out..but he shouldn't be at the recep

Re: Babies at the Wedding?
I had a total of 12 kids at my wedding....and about 6 of them were under 2 years old. They are family....and I wanted my family there and I didn't want to start WW3 over it. I hired 2 babysitters for the day. All the 'babies' stayed in the bridal suite during the ceremony...(I spread the word prior to the wedding day, that the 'babies' could not be at the ceremony because I didn't want the crying or the distractions. Everyone understood. During the reception, the babies were at their parents table and the older kids were at the kids table (they were right next to each other). Suprisingly...everyone loved the babysitter thing, and the kids were really good...some even took a nap!
You have to do what's right for you and your family. If you don't want them there, then talk to your sister and figure out an alternate plan that works for you.
Well I say no to have a infant at a wedding but if she insists, it is your sister's wishes. Its not like she is a cousin of a cousin twice removed blah blah blah. I would make an agreement that at the ceremony, if the baby cries someone has to go outside or something with the baby.

Re: Babies at the Wedding?
well,s he's in the weddign so if soem one else ( her husband, maybe) can take the baby out if he cries during the ceremony I think that would be ok.
What friend of mine did was to invite the sibling's inlaws & with the understanding they would take the baby hom when it got late.
You might want to mention to her that the reception might be too loud for him.

Re: Babies at the Wedding?
It's a hard decision. It's not like I don't want him there but the crying and disruption is the thing. If she wants to bring him to reception and not enjoy herself that's one thing. But the ceremony- I don't think so. My FH is not thrilled and said the same thing about her putting me in that position, I am soooo not trying to start a war!

Re: Babies at the Wedding?
My nephew will be 1 1/2 at my wedding. Granted, he's significantly older than the 6 month old, but it's a similar situation. My sister is hiring a babysitter, from his day care, to come to the wedding and watch him. My sister, brother in law, and 5 year old nephew are all in the wedding party. If the little one starts crying, the baby sitter will leave with him immediately. She will also be with him during the whole reception, leaving my sister and brother in law to enjoy themselves and relax.

Re: Babies at the Wedding?
In a perfect world, it would all be black and white and babies just wouldn't belong at weddings just like they don't belong in strip clubs. But there's always the grey areas. I have a similar situation and one of my BMs just gave birth to her 2nd child Monday. She was going to drop out of the wedding but I want her in so I said, listen whatever you gotta do with the kids is fine with me. You want to bring them, bring them, if not, then don't. I know that she will choose what's right for her child. And to me, as much as it would burn me to hear a wailing child in the middle of my ceremony (they better take it out), it's still more important that she be there. She knows that having her children there is not the best option for anyone, so she will try her hardest to work something else out... which is what your sister should be doing -- what's best for the child, not what's best for herself. She should not have put you in that position.

I agree that babies do not belong at a wedding, especially the ceremony. Maybe they can get a sitter for the ceremony and if your sister wants to bring the baby to the reception, than that's really her choice. If the baby is there, she's the one who will have a less enjoyable time because of it, not you. Your DJ/band will drown out a crying 6 month old anyway.

Re: Babies at the Wedding?
What's best for the child is definitely not to be at the church and especially not at the reception - all the people, germs, loud music etc. I can't imagine a mom subjecting her child to that. If she wants to participate in your wedding she will find an alternative. It's your day and you should not have to deal with it. This may sound harsh - but I worked at a catering hall while in school and witnessed numerous occaisons where babies and toddlers created all kinds of distractions and disruptions.

I agree with all...Try to be nice, but say no way! That's not fair of her to ask you that! I can definitely see disaster with a baby that young!
