babies at wedding, can't take it anymore.. help!!

babies at wedding, can't take it anymore.. help!!

I know there has been a lot of controversy in the past on these boards about people that want kids at their wedding, VS people that don't. I'm not saying kids should or shouldn't be invited, that is a personal choice, so please no one take offense.

So, originally we had said we didn't want young kids at the wedding, really only infants and babies. Like I said this is a personal choice, and for me I really don't want babies at the wedding, as in kids under 5. So, we said no kids.. then ffil decided that he was going to bring his grandson from florida because he had to, he takes care of him. So we included him as the ring bearer, and since he was coming, I invited any kids over 5, and made this clear to all my family members who have babies and children.

Now, fh's stepbrother, from florida, tells ffil that he is going to bring his kids, even though he already rsvp'd without them. No phone call, email, doesn't ask us if this is ok. He has a 3 year old, and a 9 month old. I'm really upset about this for several reasons. First of all, they didn't ask us if this was ok, even though they used to keep in touch with us.. ever since the invitations have gone out, we haven't heard from them. Also, it really makes me look bad to my family members that I asked not to bring their babies because they have made arrangments, including my cousin's mother flying in from Indiana to babysit. Also, the bottom line is that I really don't want a baby at the wedding. So now I am put in a really tough position. I can't force these people to make these babysitting arrangements, I can't provide babysitting services since I have already inconvenienced other people into making plans for their kids, and I know that when my cousin sees this baby at the wedding, she's going to be offended that her baby wasn't invited, she is a troublemaker.

The only thing I can think of doing is emailing them and being semi-honest, as in.. i really need to know what you plan on doing, and I've already told everyone else not to bring babies and it is making me look really bad. I'm not saying you can't, but it is putting me in a touch position. Fh is really upset because he agrees but doesn't want to cause any problems or confrontations. So, I don't know what to do. Any advice?

PS.. I really can't tell you how many annoying things have been happening as we get closer to the wedding. I really feel for all you girls who are going to be given a hard time. I have people rsvping without including guests even though they're bringing guests. I have people asking if their parents can come, their babies can come, if I'm hiring a babysitter, how they're going to get to the ceremony, why they weren't invited with a date (my grandfather).. and to top it all off, my own sister rsvp'ed a big fat NO with no explanation. I can't tell how you stressed out I am, and this was just the icing on the cake.

Any advice would be appreciated, I really am clueless.. thanks

wait - they didn't tell you they are bringing their kids themselves?

i hate to say this but since they rsvp'd with no kids and they never mentioned it to YOU or your FH i would just let them show up with the kids and most likely they will look like idiots - i would just make sure to mention during the wedding that you had no idea the kids would be in attendance - i would just pretend to be shocked to see them......

Oh you poor thing! You need some non wedding time to relax. Maybe a massage or something!

I think the email I idea is PERFECT! You are being honest without being offensive. You are getting your point across in the right manner. You can't not say anything about it... so I would do JUST THAT!

What's up with your sister RSVPing NO?!?!?!?! What?!?!?!? Are you guys close? In contact? There MUST be more to that story! I've never heard of such a thing... unless there was some sort of falling out?

I'm sorry you are going through all this. Hugs for you! Lots of them too!

I had a similar situation.
I am also only having children from the bridal party at the wedding. My cousin recently had a baby in November, and right away said she would not be able to find a baby sitter...so I let that slide. Then we just got an rsvp from relatives in S. Carolina. We specificly wrote the 2 names on the outside. She rsvp'd adding on her daughters name who is 3. I understand they are coming from far, and it is the day before Easter. But at least ask us first. Don't assume.

We are having an evening wedding, most want a night out with out the kids anyway...
If it were a day time wedding I might have done it differently.
But also we were already over the max amount of people that they can fit, if we invited everyone's kids, we would have had to get a bigger place...
So we've decided to just accept whomever wants to bring there kids to not cause problems.

I would definatly send him an email stating your situation and see what he says...

Are you close with your sister that rsvp'd no? Did you get into an argument? Have you spoken to her since?

If they had FH dad call and tell you... then they know you know... so I don't think that would work. It would most likely cause more drama... then they might start questioning FH father and you start to put him in the middle of things.

I feel like honesty is best.

maybe if you send them an email stating that you 'heard' he was thinking of bringing his kids and since there are no kids allowed you wanted to make sure he has arrangements made because you would hate to inconvience him. HTH

its such a sticky situation - if you call or email them there could be an argument or awkwardness, a fight, who knows what could happen.....but if you just let them show up with the kids people will think they had some nerve and they look like idiots at least id hope that they would look like idiots - and then after the wedding you can complain to all of your family and friend about how inconsiderate they were and how you can't believe they balls they had to show up with their kids.....kwim?

i dont know, im spiteful and mean so its probably not great advice

that is also a good idea - you are kind of implying that they got a sitter which reiterates the fact that the kids WERE NOT invited

ugh i hate this!

i had these problems too - not with kids - with adults!

This is a great idea as well... but be prepared for a back up plan. What if they say 'No we don't have any arrangements for the kids, what do you suggest?' or something to that effect.

Whatever you decide to do... just make sure you cover ALL angles beforehand!

I do think the email would be the best thing to do. What makes me so mad is that these people just got married a few years ago, and definitely know what it's like to plan a wedding, and they must know that this isn't ok!!

The thing with my sister, yes we were always very close.. she had a big falling out with my parents a few years ago and doesn't speak to them. I thought she would still be there for me.. but apparently not. I was shocked and very upset obviously, she basically stopped talking to me once we started planning the wedding. Now her phone numbers are disconnected and I'm just giving up on her. I honestly don't know what's going on.

Ooo... I like this suggestion. Put it back on them where it belongs. You made yourself clear; they should be respectful of that.

My recommendation would be to blame it on the reception hall. Say you are at capacity and you heard that he was bringing one infant and one toddler, and that this would not be accepted by the reception hall. You can even say stuff like 'I know it's just one or two extra people, but these are the RH's rules, not ours. Sorry!'

Don't have a seat for the toddler, so if he ends up bringing both the kids then he'll have to deal with where to seat her.

This is what I did for those who didn't RSVP on time. I sent them emails or left them voicemails saying 'I'm meeting with my hall this weekend and need to give a final headcount, and we won't be able to change the number after this weekend. So, please let me know if you can attend.'

UGH I know what you are saying. My whole family is on Long Island but my Fiance is not from here and is in the Military. As many know, almost all of his friends in the Military already have children and they will be traveling from literally south dakota to cali to Va to NY so we are stuck letting them bring their kids or them not coming at all. The my Fiance is from Tennessee originally then Georgia and finally PA so how do I tell the out of town guests they cant bring kids!! Trust me they will just not come! I finally gave up and I am just inviting the whole dam family. I will tell you that my Kids will be at every wedding his family ever has. Its rediculous but don't get yourself upset. People honestly don't think. I dont need a 6 month old at my wedding, but will i notice it? I would skip the email, trust me they know how you feel unless they don't think and if they dont, then just feel bad for them!!!
Good Luck!

WOW. First off, I am so sorry for your troubles and frustrations. RSVP issues are somehting I have been dreading throughout the planning process. I have a similar situation with FH's aunt who also happens to be our officiant. She has FOUR children of various ages and FH and I really want an adult reception. How can we tell her no? I dont think the oldest one is old enough to watch the other 3 while she is OOT Again as you noted this is OUR preference and for those who have no issue with children no offense. Additionally, Fh's 2 sisters have a combined total of SEVEN children. Both them and their husbands are both in the wedding....What are we to do with them? Fh has no clue if they plan to bring them. I dont even know if we get a reduced rate for kids/ vendor meals It is not in my contract and I have yet to find out......

That said, I understand your dilemma. In a perfect world people would be respectful of a couples wishes but this is far from a perfect world. I am not a parent but I would think that parents would welcome the night off so to speak...IDK

Your plan sounds like the best approach. Be as honest as possible and explain that others have gone through great lengths to abide by your wishes. if you truly want to be blunt, you can note that financially, especially in this economy additional guests ( children or not) are simply not feasible for you and FH

Since these are FH's fam members perhaps he will have more success... I truly hope all works out for the best.

Good Luck,

WOW! You would think they would be more considerate then. Some people.. Sheesh!

Sister: Some people just need time for themselves... and when they do that they can't see how it can actually be selfish at times. I feel bad for her not being there for you on this special day... and not only that... but there might be one day that she will regret not going and there won't be any way of taking that back or changing the past.
You are right though... sometimes you have to just let people go their seperate ways... It's sad how she has shut you out. Even with a falling out with your parents... she should at least have it in her to be there for you.. After all you are her sister!

But even with an *** sister... I'm POSITIVE you will be surrounded by sooo many other loving people that day. Even though no one would take her place, i'm sure.... you will still have enough goodness going on all around you to make up for it!

Thank you so much.. I'm not too upset anymore, honestly she is a drama queen and I'm glad my parents and other sister don't have to worry about seeing her.

Thanks for all the responses, I know this is a rough subject, and it seems like most people have gone through something similar..

let them sweat the no seat for the kid for a few minutes, lol. i like that idea.

ugh, i hope i dont have to go through this sorta stuff. sounds soo uncomfortable!

We're having kids at our wedding (none under 5), and like you said, it's a very personal decision.. People should respect your wishes.. You should get in touch with them and be very honest about your feelings... IT'S YOUR DAY, not theirs.

I think this is great advice.

Just so you know, this issue is pretty much the reason I have barely posted in a month. The whole issue of kids at the wedding has turned into such a massive fight in my family, that at this point, I'm just showing up. All of the pleasure has been sapped out of this for me, and I will never speak to my sister in law, I will barely speak to my brother, and my relationship with my parents is strained forever.

Do yourself a favor. Say no. Stay firm. I tried this, and then my dad said that if my brother's kid didn't come, he wouldn't come either.

So of course, I crumbled.

Cut to a few weeks later, and me telling my father to shut the F up, and I can't believe he would use my adoration of him to manipulate me into getting what he wanted. I told him that I regretted the decision to get married like he would never know.

Let me just say that prior to this, I had NEVER fought with my dad before, with the exception of some trivial teen crap.

Don't let it come to this. In the last few weeks, I have gotten my dress almost finished, I have had my shower, and I haven't posted about any of it, because coming on here sometimes rips my heart out, because I remember how much I used to enjoy the planning, and now I'm just so furious that I've ruined it for myself. I know who I am, and I can't get over the anger, and the last three months of my engagement were completely ruined. And I know you guys will say get over it, but it just can't happen (there is a lot here that I'm not going into).

Please don't let this happen to you. Either say no and stick with it, or decide that you are going to have kids there, and don't think about it again, if you can.

Best of luck to you. I hope it all works out.
